The primary focus of the EMT is to provide basic emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system and for those patients who require non-emergency or interfacility medical transport. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight.

EMTs perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The EMT is a link into the health care system and resource for routine and interfacility transports.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Possession of a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • National Registry of EMTs Emergency Medical Technician certification to be obtained in 30 days of hire.
  • Note:

    Due to NREMT implementation and grandfather clauses, some staff may not have NREMT certification.
  • West Virginia Office of EMS EMT Certification to be obtained in 30 days of hire.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course or ability to successfully complete within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid BLS for Healthcare Providers (AHA Preferred) to be obtained in 30 days of hire.
  • Successful completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) within one (1) month of hire:
    • IS 700:
      An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
    • IS 100:
      Introduction to the ICS System
    • IS 200:
      Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response
    • IS 800:
      National Response Framework, an Introduction
  • ITLS or PHTLS certification (obtained within 6 months of hire and renewed within 2 years of certification date).
  • PEPP certification (obtained within 6 months of hire and renewed within 2 years of certification date).
  • Preferred Qualifications

    Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Associate, Bachelor, or graduate level degree from a regionally accredited post-secondary educational institution.
  • AMLS.
  • GEMS (Geriatric Education) Certification.
  • Other relevant prehospital certifications.
  • Experience:

  • Two (2) years or more of experience as a field provider at the EMT level.

  • Work Attitude: Take initiative, exert maximum effort, and maintain an optimistic demeanor. Measures: direct observation, team feedback.
  • Acting with Integrity: Follow ethical standards, maintain patient confidentiality, and accept personal responsibility. Measures: direct observation, team feedback.
  • Communication: Understand importance of effective communication with stakeholders. Measures: direct observation, team feedback.
  • Problem Solving: Use information to make educated decisions; understand analytical decision processes; knowledge of reasonable job functions of other field providers. Measures: direct observation, team feedback.
  • Executing Tasks - Response: Respond to all requests timely. Target dispatch-to-unit times and transport arrival windows. Measures: ePCR/dispatch data, direct observation, team feedback.
  • Executing Tasks - Patient Care: Provide excellent patient care based on protocols, QA/QI initiatives, and evidence-based practice. Measures: patient care reports.
  • Quality Assurance - Documentation: Complete and review patient care and billing documentation for completeness and accuracy. Measures: random sampling, billing QA.
  • Quality Improvement - Competency &

    Education:

    Complete mandatory education and competency programs in a timely fashion. Measures: completed education and competencies.
  • Managing Significant Incidents: Respond to multi-patient incidents and serve as an officer in the Incident Command System as appropriate. Measures: direct observation, team feedback.
