Position Overview

WVU Medicine, West Virginia University Health System Medical Group (WVUHS Medical Group) seeks an Advanced Practice Provider (PA or NP) Nocturnist for Potomac Valley Hospital. The role involves comprehensive management of hospitalized patients, coordination of specialty teams, delivery of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and facilitation of discharge planning.

Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner

Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing.
National certification by an approved APRN certification center.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
American Heart Association BLS certification; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

Preferred Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner

ACNP or AGACNP preferred; FNPs will be considered.

Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant program.
Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program.
Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
Licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
American Heart Association BLS certification; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

Preferred Qualifications – Physician Assistant

Master’s level education in Medical/Surgical (as applicable).

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Manage comprehensive and individualized care for hospitalized patients and their families in the inpatient phase of hospitalization and plan disposition for immediate post‑discharge in the ambulatory setting.

Complete daily rounds; consult and/or pre‑procedure evaluations.

Complete integrated assessments.

With collaboration of hospitalist faculty or following established clinical guidelines and protocols, order additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate.

Perform and communicate results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.

Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings in patient evaluations.

Perform succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.

Facilitate patient discharge by coordinating appropriate services and tests prior to discharge necessary for outpatient follow‑up appointments in the clinic (as applicable).

Develop a comprehensive individualized plan of care for hospitalized patients which includes teaching, discharge planning (as applicable), and necessary referrals to other members of the health care team as necessary.

Demonstrate expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum of their educational experience and certification.

Identify unstable or complex hospitalized patient care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the clinic and/or hospital setting.

Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.

Evaluate general medicine patients and serve as a coordinator for follow up, procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (as applicable).

Assist in the collection of outcome measures (as applicable).

Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation and management of the individual needs of patients/families.

Demonstrate the ability to utilize equipment in a safe manner.

Base decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientific principles, established standards of care and/or research findings.

Utilize teaching/learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families and the community.

Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to appropriate patient/family preferences, priorities and readiness to learn.

Update own knowledge base throughout the year.

Complete all identified clinical competencies.

Serve as a resource person for staff caring for the hospitalized patient.
