Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Performs a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures to provide optimum information for the diagnosis and/or treatment of patients.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:

  • Graduate of a Medical Imaging Program.
  • Must possess current or temporary Nuclear Medicine license as required by state board where services will be provided:
    • MD:
      Nuclear Medicine Technologist through Maryland Board of Physicians
    • OH:
      Nuclear Medicine Technologist through Ohio Department of Health
    • PA:
      No state license required
    • VA:
      Radiological Technologist license through the Virginia Board of Medicine
    • WV:
      Nuclear Medicine Technologist License OR Nuclear Medicine Apprentice License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board
    • If performing CT imaging in addition to Nuclear Medicine, must additionally hold one of the following licenses through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board:
      • Radiological Technologist
      • Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT License
      • Nuclear Medicine and Non-Diagnostic CT License
    • Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Board (NMTCB) as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist within six months of hire.
    • Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
    • State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
    Core Duties and Responsibilities

    • Attends and participates in departmental meetings and activities to support progress improvement and team building.
    • Participates in planning and implementing change, maintaining and improving high quality, cost effective department operations.
    • Performs a full range of nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging and/or treatment procedures to provide optimum information for the diagnosis and ultimate treatment of patients.
    • Plans and performs imaging procedures to produce medical images for the diagnosis or treatment of patients meeting the quality standards of the department as identified through professional literature and department protocol, policy and procedure.
    • Minimizes radiation exposure to patients and staff in accordance with Radiation Safety Department policy, procedure and guidelines as well as State, Federal, The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory bodies.
    • Reports equipment failures immediately upon identification using identified communication mechanism to ensure the performance of radiology services.
    • Assesses patients' needs related to comfort, hygiene and range of motion and provides support accordingly.
    • Performs as a clinical and/or didactic instructor meeting the quality standards of the radiology education program(s) as identified through professional literature, department and radiology education program(s) protocol, policy and procedure.
    • For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements:
      Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
