Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS personnel is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients’ dignity and ensuring community safety. Job duties include non‑emergency convalescent transfers, community event medical stand‑by, and response to emergency calls to provide immediate care and transport to critically sick and injured patients, within the scope of training and authorization.

• Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, and maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
• Provide out‑of‑hospital care and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction.
• Perform physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and balancing a minimum of 125 lbs alone and 250 lbs with assistance, as required for patient care and equipment handling.
• Listen, comprehend, and respond to spoken information from co‑workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and emergency scene sounds.
• Communicate verbally in person, by telephone, or via telecommunications in English, and meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle.
• Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions; document patient information in an approved WV OEMS record system.
• Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills needed for quality patient care; be able to bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces.
• Inspect EMS equipment to ensure supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and perform fluid checks, and report needed maintenance.
• Respond to callback or call‑in emergency situations.
• Assist other emergency personnel as required and complete tasks assigned by company supervisors and management.
• Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities, and ambulances; be self‑starter with little oversight and adaptable to change, functioning in a team‑based management structure.
• Perform event stand‑by operations for sporting events, community festivals, and other large‑crowd events.
• Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first responder level; handle uncommon situations; perform emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
• Understand stress response techniques and basic body substance isolation; respect HIPAA privacy and patient rights.
• Interact professionally with a variety of outside agencies and personnel, including medical facility staff, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.

• General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance handling, and proper use of EMS equipment.
• Ability to learn through training using a wide variety of EMS methods.
• Knowledge of road/street systems and general physical layout of assigned communities.
• Skill in airway management, ventilation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and use of appropriate medications and defibrillator devices; proficiency in trauma care, hemorrhage control, shock treatment, wound bandaging, and immobilization of injured extremities, necks or spines.

• EMS operations occur 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in all weather conditions; ambulances and personnel must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
• EMS crew members operate in uncontrolled public arenas and must be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared for a wide variety of patient types, behaviors, and situations. Safety, professionalism, and compassion are critical traits for success.

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of workforce evaluations and/or equivalent educational screening exam approved by Jan‑Care/GEMS.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving history as determined by the insurance company.
• Pass initial and random drug screenings; compliance with drug‑free company policy.
• Complete background checks, including OIG excluded individuals, criminal history, driving history, child/elder abuse, and references.
