JOB SUMMARY:
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides immediate, compassionate, and professional pre-hospital care to patients in emergency and non-emergency situations. This role includes assessing medical needs, performing life-saving interventions, and safely transporting patients to appropriate medical facilities. EMTs work closely with paramedics, nurses, physicians, and first responders to deliver high-quality care under often stressful and urgent conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary coursework in health sciences preferred
- Strong knowledge of basic emergency medical procedures and patient care techniques
- Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in high-stress situations
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Commitment to patient confidentiality and professional ethics
Licensure/Certification:
- Current West Virginia EMT certification issued by the West Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services (WVOEMS)
- National Registry of EMT (NREMT) certification required for initial WV EMT licensure
- Current CPR/BLS certification from an approved provider (e.g., AHA or Red Cross)
- Valid West Virginia driver's license with acceptable driving record (required for patient transport positions)
- Must meet WVOEMS continuing education requirements to maintain certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift, carry, and move patients and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds with or without assistance
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching required during patient care and transport
- Ability to operate stretchers, stair chairs, and related transport equipment in confined spaces and uneven terrain
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient assessment and safe vehicle operation
- Manual dexterity to perform medical procedures and operate equipment under urgent conditions
- Must be able to work long shifts with potential for extended periods of physical and mental stress
Environmental Conditions
- Work performed in both indoor and outdoor settings, including homes, accident scenes, and healthcare facilities
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions common in West Virginia's rural and mountainous regions (snow, rain, heat, uneven terrain)
- Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials
- Regular exposure to high-stress and emotionally challenging situations, including traumatic injuries and medical emergencies
- Work hours may include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended on-call duties
- Frequent use of personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, gowns, safety gear) as required by OSHA and hospital policy
JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL SKILLS (Detail job competencies)
- Respond promptly to emergency calls; assess patient condition and determine appropriate care
- Obtain patient history, perform focused physical exams, and provide emergency medical treatment at the scene and during transport
- Administer basic life support interventions, including CPR, oxygen therapy, and airway management, following established EMT standards, policies, and protocols
- Monitor patient status, document condition changes, and report findings accurately and in a timely manner
- Safely transport, transfer, and assist patients using proper lifting and moving techniques
- Maintain cleanliness and readiness of ambulance, equipment, and supplies; restock as needed and follow infection control procedures
- Perform routine checks of ambulance condition; report concerns promptly
- Communicate courteously and professionally with patients, families, healthcare staff, dispatch, and other responders via radio, telephone, and in person
