Full-Time Position Summary The Phlebotomist performs venipuncture and specimen collection for outpatients of all age groups as ordered by a medical provider. The position performs phlebotomy duties and related responsibilities in accordance with Boone Memorial Health (BMH) Laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Collect routine blood and urine specimens.

Verify patient identity prior to specimen collection.

Provide age-appropriate care and treatment to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in accordance with departmental standards.

Perform venipuncture using aseptic technique and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Transport specimens to the laboratory in accordance with infection control policies and procedures.

Collect specimens for chain-of-custody drug testing.

Assist with reporting functions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

Maintain a clean, neat, orderly, and adequately stocked work area.

Answer telephone calls, assess the caller's needs, and respond appropriately. Seek assistance from the Supervisor, Medical Assistant (MA), Registered Nurse (RN), Laboratory Technicians, or Providers as necessary.

Perform clerical duties and utilize basic computer skills.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date filing systems for laboratory results requiring filing.

Work effectively as part of a team while demonstrating respect toward supervisory personnel and fellow employees.

Participate in performance improvement activities.

Demonstrate understanding of and compliance with hospital policies and procedures and assume responsibility for learning new policies and procedures.

Attend required in-service education and training.

Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors, coworkers, and self.

Communicate effectively and tactfully with patients and fellow staff members.

Demonstrate competency in required skills, procedures, and job-related concepts.

Maintain a telephone in the residence as a condition of employment.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies Valid phlebotomy certification.

Valid Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) Technician License or the ability to obtain the license upon hire.

Knowledge of phlebotomy procedures, specimen collection, and laboratory practices.

Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, providers, and coworkers.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Basic computer skills and clerical competency.

Ability to follow established policies, procedures, safety standards, and infection control practices.

Supervisory Responsibilities None.

Physical Demands The physical demands of this position include:

Sitting: 6–8 hours.

Standing: 1–2 hours.

Walking.

Lifting less than 10 pounds frequently.

Lifting 11–50 pounds occasionally/seldom.

Reaching.

Pulling.

Kneeling.

Crouching/stooping.

Coordination of simultaneous operations.

Travel Requirements The employee may be required to transport laboratory specimens to the main laboratory at Boone Memorial Health.

Required

Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent.

Formalized training in phlebotomy.

Valid phlebotomy certification.

Current CPR certification.

Valid driver's license.

Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) license or the ability to obtain the license upon hire.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position.

Preferred

Education and Experience Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.

Experience with CLIA-waived testing preferred.
