Summary
The Buyer is responsible for purchasing plant commodity items, services and capital equipment. The Buyer is part of a Purchasing Team that has the responsibility to coordinate and consolidate TIMET’s purchasing power across multiple facilities. This position will ensure that procurement of all supplies, equipment, materials and services are provided in the most cost-effective, internal customer‑compliant, and ethical manner. At the same time purchases and contracts must be made in accordance with corporate policy and compliant with ISO quality standards and the Sarbanes‑Oxley Act (SOX).
EssentialFunctions
- Check requisitions for completeness and clarity; obtain any missing information and diplomatically instruct requisitioners or specifiers as needed.
- Initiate request for quotations; recommend and take appropriate action.
- Compile and analyze statistical data to evaluate price/cost conditions; partner with end users to determine recommendations and negotiate cost improvements; analyze supplier operations to determine capability to meet plant objectives when applicable.
- Develop and implement strategies to optimize supply‑chain performance, recognizing total‑cost implications.
- Initiate and coordinate purchase contract negotiations with suppliers and company end users.
- Negotiate payment terms with suppliers that support corporate cash‑flow goals.
- Support global, national, and regional supply agreements by leading, participating in, and implementing agreements when directed by management.
- Maintain records and documentation to assure compliance with corporate policy and procedure.
- Resolve discrepancies such as discrepant pricing, warranty claims, non‑compliance with specifications, over shipments, and negotiate return of items no longer needed by the plant.
- Keep management informed about any business development that might affect the company and make recommendations regarding those developments.
- Work with the management team to ensure that all deliveries satisfy the assigned purchase orders and report any back‑ordered or missing products.
- Work with receiving personnel on problems and questions regarding items being received; notify vendors of problems and handle solutions.
- Visit potential vendor facilities to inspect warehouses, materials, and computer setups in order to evaluate them as potential suppliers.
- Monitor top suppliers and track cost savings.
- Assign SCAR to critical suppliers.
- Act within TIMET’s standard code of ethics.
- Keep the Senior Buyer informed of all activities or problems and submit reports as requested by management.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Competencies
Be an independent‑minded team facilitator who can manage TIMET’s suppliers while gaining their trust and insight to lower cost or improve productivity.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university majoring in Engineering, Logistics, or Purchasing and at least three years of related job experience. Most candidates have a manufacturing/warehousing background with a minimum of five years of experience.
Special Skills
Self‑motivated individual who can manage and complete a wide array of daily purchases, manage projects on time, and meet expectations on cost savings, inventory reduction, and/or product improvement.
Can work as part of a professional buying team that coordinates purchases.
Understands purchasing concepts, legal terms, cost concepts, and how they relate to total company performance; knowledge of purchasing law, Uniform Commercial Code, and terms and conditions.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work under minimum supervision.
Willingness to pursue professional development as needed.
Ability to maintain composure in high‑stress situations with suppliers, peers, and customers.
Ability to work extended hours as needed.
Experienced negotiator who can help reduce overall costs and assist on capital projects.
Operates within TIMET’s Corporate Policies, ISO & Quality Procedures, and is SOX compliant.
Proficient user of Microsoft Office and working knowledge of SAP or another ERP system.
