Summary

The Buyer is responsible for purchasing plant commodity items, services and capital equipment. The Buyer is part of a Purchasing Team that coordinates and consolidates TIMET's purchasing power across multiple facilities. This position ensures procurement of all supplies, equipment, materials and services are provided in the most cost-effective, internal customer‑compliant, and ethical manner. Purchases/contracts must be made in accordance with corporate policy and compliant with ISO quality standards and the Sarbanes‑Oxley Act (SOX).

Essential

Functions
  • Check requisitions for completeness and clarity. Obtain necessary missing information where required. Diplomatically instruct requisitioners or specifiers on required data.
  • Initiate request for quotations; recommend and take appropriate action.
  • Compile and analyze statistical data to evaluate price/cost conditions. Partner with end user to determine recommendations and negotiate for cost improvements. Perform analysis of supplier operations to determine capability to meet plant objectives if applicable.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize supply chain performance, recognizing total cost implications.
  • Initiate and coordinate purchase contract negotiations with suppliers and company end users.
  • Negotiate payment terms with suppliers that support corporate cash flow goals.
  • Support global, national and regional supply agreements by leading, participating and implementing national/global agreements when directed by management.
  • Maintain records and documentation to assure compliance with corporate policy and procedure.
  • Resolve discrepancies such as discrepant pricing, warranty claims, failure to comply with specifications, over‑shipments, and negotiate return items no longer needed by the plant.
  • Keep management informed about any business developments that might affect the company and make recommendations.
  • Work with the management team to ensure all deliveries satisfy assigned purchase orders and report any back‑ordered or missing products.
  • Work with receiving personnel on problems and questions regarding items being received; notify vendors of problems and handle solutions.
  • Visit potential vendor facilities to inspect warehouses, materials, and computer setups in order to evaluate potential suppliers.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Monitor top suppliers and track cost savings.
  • Assign SCAR (supplier corrective action report) to critical suppliers.
  • Act within TIMET's standard code of ethics.
  • Keep the Senior Buyer informed of all activities or problems and submit reports as requested by management.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Competencies: Independent minded team facilitator who can manage TIMET's suppliers while gaining their trust and insight to lower cost or improve productivity.
  • Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree from a four‑year college or university majoring in Engineering, Logistics, or Purchasing and three years related job experience. Most have manufacturing/warehousing background with a minimum of five years experience.

    Skills:

    Self‑motivated individual who can manage and complete a wide array of daily purchases and manage projects on time meeting expectations on cost savings, inventory reduction, and/or product improvement. Ability to work as part of a professional buying team that coordinates purchases. Understanding of purchasing concepts, legal terms, cost concepts and how they relate to total company performance. Knowledge of purchasing law, Uniform Commercial Code, and terms & conditions.

    Good written and oral communication skills. Ability to work under minimal supervision. Willingness to pursue professional development as needed. Ability to maintain composure in high‑stress situations with suppliers, peers, and customers. Ability to work extended hours when required. Experienced negotiator who can reduce overall costs and assist on capital projects. Works within TIMET's Corporate Policies, ISO & Quality Procedures, and SOX compliance.

    Must be proficient in Microsoft Office and have working knowledge of SAP or another ERP system.
