Job Description Summary
Aviagen is hiring a Hatchery Manager. The primary responsibilities will be to plan, develop, and implement policies and practices for the operation of the hatchery, ensuring attainment of goals and profitable operation. The role will direct strategic operational plans in hatching eggs and chick production and oversee compliance with company policies, NCC Animal Guidelines, and local, state and federal regulations.
ResponsibilitiesManage and coordinate hatchery activities through supervisory personnel, including egg pick‑up and deliveries, care, incubation, hatching, grading, vaccination, and preparation and shipping of chicks. Manage and coordinate facility and equipment maintenance, chick care, packing, and transfer activities. Oversee the Quality Assurance/Quality Control program; communicate with and assist the Breeder Manager to project egg needs; coordinate with contract service providers as applicable.
Maintain weekly hatch schedules; monitor and manage facility equipment and repairs; maintain hatchery sanitation; establish and manage safety policies and procedures; keep current knowledge of industry trends and hatchery equipment operations; manage reports, review and analyze data, and perform corrective actions; manage hatchery budget; manage the Embrex program and the Animal Welfare Program; comply with safety, corporate, ethical, and legal guidelines.
- Direct supervision of 2–4 salaried employees and oversight of 20–25 hourly and salaried employees.
- Leader of People position requiring delegation, conflict management, planning, people sizing, and customer focus.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Poultry Science, Agricultural Science, Biology, Management, or related field from an accredited institution OR 8 years equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum 4 years progressive hatchery experience (or combined hatchery and poultry industry experience) and minimum 2 years supervisor experience within a similar environment.
- Extensive maintenance knowledge (electrical, mechanical, PLC operations, heating and cooling, hydraulics, etc.) and knowledge of Department of Transportation, State, and Federal laws.
- Previous hatchery management experience, advanced poultry science knowledge, and advanced interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate people; advanced knowledge of math, financial terms, and reporting; practical computer skills with MS Office; advanced organizational and attention to detail skills.
- Sound work ethic, honesty, moral character, and ability to interpret data and draw logical conclusions; critical thinking in standardized and non-routine situations; ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and follow written, oral, and diagram instructions.
