CNC Machinist

We are seeking an experienced CNC Machinist to program, set up, operate and maintain multiaxis CNC milling and turning centers to produce high-precision components. The role requires strong experience with CNC programming (CAM and Gcode), tooling and fixture setup, blueprint and GD&T interpretation, metrology and quality assurance. The ideal candidate will support continuous improvement, machine reliability and on-time delivery while adhering to safety and lean manufacturing principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program and optimize CNC operations using CAM software and manual Gcode for 3, 4 and 5-axis machining and turning/lathe operations.
  • Set up, tool and fixture machines for production runs including tool presetting, tool offsetting and work holding design assistance.
  • Operate multiaxis milling and turning machines (mills, lathes, 5-axis centers) to produce parts to print and within tolerance.
  • Select and apply appropriate cutting tools, inserts, end mills and fixtures; set feeds and speeds based on material, tool and operation.
  • Perform first-article inspections and in-process measurements using calipers, micrometers, gauges and CMM to ensure conformance to drawings and GD&T.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Perform NC code optimization and troubleshooting to improve cycle time, surface finish and machine efficiency.
  • Conduct machine maintenance and preventive maintenance tasks to maximize uptime and reliability; assist with repairs as needed.
  • Apply shop floor quality systems including SPC, inspection documentation, and nonconforming part disposition.
  • Deburr, finish and perform assembly or secondary operations as required to meet customer requirements.
  • Document setup sheets, tooling lists, inspection results and process parameters; communicate production status and issues to supervision.
  • Follow safety procedures, coolant and chip control systems, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts (Lean, SMED) to reduce waste and changeover time.
  • Train and mentor junior machinists and operators on best practices, tooling, programming and inspection methods.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience; demonstrated experience with multiaxis (3/4/5-axis) milling and CNC turning/lathe operations.
  • Proficient in CNC programming: GCode, ISO/NC programming and NC code optimization.
  • Experienced with CAM packages such as Mastercam, GibbsCAM, Fusion 360, SolidCAM, CAMWorks and familiarity with template-based programming workflows.
  • Strong background with machine controls including Fanuc, Haas, Siemens, Heidenhain, Mazak and Okuma preferred.
  • Skilled in tooling and fixture design, tool presetting, and selection of cutting tools (end mills, inserts) and holders.
  • Deep understanding of feeds and speeds, cutting tool life, coolant systems and chip evacuation techniques.
  • Proficient in boring, tapping, threading, reaming, drilling and achieving specified surface finish.
  • Excellent blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
  • Experience with metrology equipment and inspection techniques, including CMM programming/use and conventional inspection tools.
  • Familiarity with SPC, quality assurance processes, tolerancing, inspection documentation and corrective action.
  • Knowledge of material properties and machining considerations for steel, aluminum, stainless, titanium and plastics, including heat-treatment effects.
  • Hands-on experience with shop math, measuring conversions and machining calculations.
  • Experience with machine maintenance, preventive maintenance schedules and troubleshooting mechanical/hydraulic/pneumatic issues.
  • Proven ability to optimize processes for cycle time, cost and part quality; experience with Lean manufacturing and SMED preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, good communication and ability to work independently or in a team.
  • Relevant technical diploma, certificate or apprenticeship in CNC machining, manufacturing technology or equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • Commitment to safety compliance, PPE use and maintaining a clean, organized work area.
