The opportunity:

This position is part of the Northern Ontario team and reports to the Regional Manager based in Thunder Bay. The Community Coordinator-Greenstone works both independently and collaboratively to carry out and promote the work of United for Literacy in the region. This position creates, implements and evaluates community programs; develops and manages community partnerships; coordinates, delivers and evaluates training to volunteers and community members.

The Community Coordinator provides supervision and mentorship to support staff and volunteer tutors. The successful candidate will work from a Longlac office and at program sites in Longlac, Geraldton and occasionally Nakina.

Major

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Program performance and compliance (50%)
  • Provide one-on-one reading support to students identified by partner schools; develop and deliver summer programs; attend community events.
  • Implement and evaluate programs by collecting qualitative and quantitative data from learners, teachers, families, and community partners.
  • Customize programming to partner context and learner needs.
  • Coordinate resources required to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Recruit, coordinate and manage Interns and volunteers by communicating expectations, planning for, monitoring and evaluating performance outcomes.
  • Provide tutor training tailored to program-type and learner needs.
  • Influence performance levels through ongoing coaching and feedback, while enforcing organizational values, policies and practices.
  • Design, deliver and evaluate literacy related workshops for staff and volunteers of partner organizations, other community stakeholders, parents and learners.
4) Relationship management (10%)
  • Build, manage and sustain external/internal relationships necessary to support organizational goals by liaising effectively with partners, volunteers, learners, management team and supporters; attending and contributing at meetings, and accurately representing the needs and interests of the organization.
Competencies and Requirements
  • One to three years experience in related field; post-secondary education preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the communities served, program planning and evaluation, partnership development and sustainability, volunteer management, relevant socio-economic issues and trends
