The Vegetable Production Assistant ( VPA ) works for Shepherd University’s Agricultural Innovation Center to assist Tabler Student Farm in all vegetable production components throughout the academic year. Due to the seasonal nature of farming, VPA’s can expect to primarily work August through mid-November and mid-February through the beginning of May. VPA’s report to the Farm Coordinator who is also their supervisor.

The VPA is expected to help with all necessary vegetable production tasks like field preparations, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, washing/packing, and weeding. The VPA will be trained in the usage of a variety of farm tools and is expected to use them appropriately. VPAs may also have the opportunity to work at local farmers markets on the weekends. They will be assigned tasks at the beginning of each shift.

This is a Federal Work Study Student Employment position. Students are not permitted to work beyond the FWS award they have been allotted for the academic year. Students may return to the farm the falling year if they are still eligible for FWS . Should they no longer be eligible, their supervisor will notify them of the separation.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at Shepherd University.
  • Degree-seeking student.
  • Must have reliable transportation. The site is located 2 miles off of main campus.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preferred applicants have experience working outside, worked or volunteered on a vegetable farm, and /or experience with vegetable gardening.
