Position Summary

The Chem Lab Coordinator is responsible for the execution and coordination of daily chemical laboratory operations, with primary accountability for the maintenance program, equipment calibrations, and troubleshooting of laboratory systems. This position ensures all laboratory equipment is operating reliably and within required accuracy standards.

In addition, the Chem Lab Coordinator supports and assists laboratory operations in the execution of chemical testing as needed, ensuring timely, accurate, and compliant results. The role maintains full alignment with training qualification standards (such as ASTM, but not limited to), safety systems, and quality management requirements defined within the laboratory training matrix. Participate in a rotating on‑call schedule.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and ensure compliance with all safety, quality, environmental, and regulatory requirements while maintaining audit‑ready documentation and operational standards.
  • Oversee laboratory testing activities, sample traceability, analytical equipment operation, and accurate communication of results to production systems.
  • Manage preventive maintenance, calibration, verification activities, and equipment records to ensure reliable and accurate laboratory performance.
  • Train, qualify, and validate competency of laboratory personnel on analytical systems, equipment, procedures, and safe work practices.
  • Coordinate daily laboratory operations and collaborate with production and technical teams to support testing priorities and effective communication.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that enhance testing accuracy, turnaround time, procedural standardization, and knowledge sharing.

Minimum Qualifications

Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field.

Experience: Minimum one year with spectrometry and combustion analysis (Leco/OES preferred) and industrial lab operations and sample preparation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a steel mill or heavy industrial laboratory.

Strong understanding of safety programs (LOTOTO, PPE) and quality systems (ISO 9001 / ISO 17025 concepts); knowledge of ASTM chemistry testing methods (e.g., ASTM A751).

Experience with laboratory calibration programs and MSA concepts, Level 2/3 automation systems.
