Post-Bac Intern, Part-Time

The West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) invites applications for a part-time, grant-funded Post-Bac Intern. This position will be responsible for assisting with field collections of specimens, coordination of specimen delivery, and be fully trained and involved with BSL-2 molecular lab work and data analysis. The individual shall also be encouraged to report and present findings from their work to the appropriate audience.

This position reports to the grant's Principal Investigator (PI).

This position is grant-funded and is subject to ongoing funding. This is a part-time position and is non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Hourly rate will be $15.94. This position shall not exceed 50% effort, or 975 hours in a fiscal year (July through June). WVSOM students are required to obtain prior approval from the appropriate Associate Dean's Office before engaging in, or accepting, any work-related activities.

This ensures that all work aligns with academic and institutional policies and does not interfere with the students' academic responsibilities. Approval must be secured in advance to guarantee compliance with WVSOM policies and procedures. The schedule for this position will be established between the PI and the employee and approved given the needs of the project and grant requirements. This position is not eligible for benefits.

Education and Experience:

The position requires the individual to have completed a bachelor's degree in a field of basic or biomedical sciences and does not require experience. Training will be provided.

Skills and Abilities

* Knowledge of scientific, experimental and research techniques applicable to the area of science involved (i.e. microbiology, physiology, cell and molecular biology, etc.);

* Knowledge of the area of science in which the work is to be performed;

* Knowledge of contemporary research methods, data collection and analysis skill;

* Ability to use complex laboratory/field instruments and equipment;

* Ability to implement protocols of assigned research projects.

* Conduct experiments, collect data, and compile reports for a specific research project.

* Maintain a safe, clean laboratory setting by conducting experiments and other procedures according to established departmental and laboratory policies and procedures.

* Follow established objectives and quality assurance, safety, environment and infection control standards.

* Maintain accurate and comprehensive records on all experiments personally conducted and organize these records so that they can be retrieved by the PI.

* Prepare reagents, media, and solutions to prepare/maintain specimens for analysis.

* Ensure responsible conduct of research and research integrity for all activities.

* Follow all rules and regulations established for the safe operation of the laboratory and protection of staff, including completing all relevant training programs such as the Hazardous Waste Management Program.

* Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
