WVUH Security Officer

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent AND 3 years of experience in the security field
• Associate's degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 1 year experience in the security field
• Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 6 months experience in the security field
• Must be 21 years of age or older
• Valid Driver's License
• Obtain certification in BLS or Heart Saver First Aid within 60 days of hire date
• State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas

• Obtain Defensive Tactics Certification
• ACT 235 training
• OC Spray Certification
• Baton Certification
• Taser User Certification
• Obtain VA DCJS Registration within six months of hire and maintain
• Successfully pass psychological evaluation
• Completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer
• Completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and coursework
• Handcuffing Tactics training
• AVADE Training Levels I - III

• Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy
• One year experience in a healthcare security environment

• Maintain consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an information and directional resource for all patients, visitors and staff
• Respond to all patient, visitor and staff requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner
• Provide physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access to patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities
• Monitor and maintain traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations
• Protect people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft and vandalism, in accordance with system and department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision
• Perform routine building rounds, building door unlocks, exterior building and parking lot patrol
• Make recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime
• Report suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons, according to system and department policy and procedures
• Respond and provide assistance to patients, visitors and staff during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues, according to system and department policy and procedures
• Provide written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner
• Respond to and provide assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
• Perform patient restraint as directed by clinical staff, and be capable of physical intervention when appropriate
• Operate Hospital-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner
• Ensure safety and proper operating condition of vehicles by performing vehicle inspections, as outlined by departmental policy
• Other requirements may include:
  Incident reporting, routine building rounds, incident investigation, crowd control, restraining patients, disaster response, domestic disputes, med G assists, parking enforcement, consistent presence and visibility, helicopter assignments, media issues, victim assistance, engage in traffic direction, policy enforcement, investigation of alarms, duress, physical intervention, tire changing, battery jumps, parking rounds, effective radio communication, escorts, accurate directions to customers, loss prevention, vehicle assists, transport equipment/staff/visitors/patients, posts assignments for exterior patrol/all canopy/all booths/building rounds/ED, and STOPS training

• Ability to sit, stand and walk for the entire shift and/or double shift
• Ability to lift, push or pull 80 pounds
• Ability to tolerate adverse environmental conditions for entire shift and/or double shift

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently be exposed to outside weather conditions

• Ability to perform effectively under often stressful situations
• Good decision making and organizational skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to train Security Officers 1 & 2
