Public Safety Shift Supervisor
Must be available for duty assignment at any Valley Health facility. Assignments may be temporary or permanent, depending on the needs of the VHS organization.
This position supervises a shift of Public Safety Officers, handling scheduling, payroll, assignments, training, evaluations, progress reports, and behavior while on duty. As a working supervisor, the majority of work is physical, similar to a Public Safety Officer, including patrolling and responding to routine service and emergency calls.
The role coordinates daily operations of the Public Safety shift to support overall hospital operations, assists in developing, reviewing, and revising department policies, SOPs, and post orders, serves on facility committees or attends meetings in the manager’s place, and may work alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, and be reassigned to other facilities as needed.
Oversees and reviews investigations conducted by shift officers before forwarding them to the manager or Director, and may temporarily fill in for the facility or regional Public Safety Captain. Each Lieutenant fully documents all rounds, writes incident reports, and submits them by the end of the shift. Must be proficient in the RMS Public Safety incident computer system and the VH Risk Qual System.
Responsible for correct communication of confidential information, performing safety inspections, checking alarm systems, monitoring CCTV, Infant Abduction, Fire Alarm, Medical Gas, and generator alarms. Investigates loss and damage reports, assists law enforcement with in‑custody individuals, ensures knowledge of campus grounds and facilities, conducts fire watches, monitors building entries, delivers cash deposits, and searches patient rooms for contraband.
Provides public safety and escorts to staff, patients, and visitors. Responds to emergency calls such as fire, biological, mass casualty, lockdown, radiation emergencies, and active shooter incidents. Assists special‑needs patients, monitors ECO/TDO patients, and intervenes in disputes.
Qualifications- High School Diploma or GED required; college degree preferred.
- One year of supervisory experience and ability to motivate a team.
- Preferred:
Two years of prior experience in healthcare public safety, law enforcement, or fire departments. - Knowledge of the Virginia mental health code preferred.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and decision‑making skills.
- Team‑building qualities and ability to cover extra shifts.
- Valid driver’s license.
- AHA (American Heart Association) certification before orientation.
- International Association for Healthcare Public Safety and Safety Basic Exam within 1 year.
- ASP baton, handcuff, OC Foam Spray, and aggression management training within 90 days; instructor certification may be required.
- IAHSS Supervisory exam within one year of promotion or hire.
- Admission of courses from an accredited school in law enforcement, safety, or related field; 2 years in a supervisory level preferred.
- Previous administrative/supervisory experience preferred.
