Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Campus Police Investigator I is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the university community and campus facilities through proactive patrol, enforcement of state laws and university policies, and emergency response services. This position exercises law enforcement authority to protect individuals and property from harm, loss, or damage; responds to calls for service; conducts investigations; and supports a safe and secure learning environment through professional and community-oriented policing practices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Available to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Ability to learn and work with computer database systems.
  • Not later than first day of employment, must hold a valid driver’s license and successfully meet all minimum requirements of WV Code 30-29-1 et. seq as to standards for law enforcement officers of West Virginia.
  • Graduation from an accredited police academy and possession of a valid law enforcement certification.
  • Prior campus law enforcement, public safety, or related law enforcement experience preferred.

Job Duties

Description of Job Duties

  • Exercises general law enforcement authority to protect life and property and to prevent injury, harm, theft, vandalism, and criminal activity on university property.
  • Patrols campus property by foot and vehicle to maintain a visible police presence and enforce state laws and university regulations.
  • Monitors campus traffic and parking operations and issues warnings or citations for violations in accordance with established procedures and policies.
  • Responds to emergencies, calls for service, alarms, accidents, suspicious activity, and other incidents requiring law enforcement assistance.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal and non-criminal incidents and initiates appropriate action in accordance with university policy and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate written reports, incident documentation, accident reports, citations, and other law enforcement records; performs data entry and updates within departmental software systems.
  • Reports fires, safety hazards, utility failures, attempted unlawful entry, and other threats to persons or property, and takes appropriate action to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
  • Assists local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as needed in matters involving or adjacent to university property.
  • Identifies, apprehends, arrests, and assists in the prosecution of individuals involved in criminal violations.
  • May assist with training activities, special events, crowd management, and other duties as assigned in support of departmental operations.
  • Provides assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors, including motorist assistance, escorts, and other public safety services.
