Job Description SummaryThe Trades Specialist/Plumber position performs a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment, primarily with plumbing and boiler systems work, but may also include electrical work, basic construction and carpentry. Some janitorial and landscaping tasks may also be required as needed. The Trades Specialist/Plumber reports to the Assistant Director of Maintenance. This is a full-time, non-classified position;
it is non-exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Minimum base salary is $50,000 though commensurate with education and experience with full state benefits. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 7:00-3:30 schedule and may require evenings and weekends as needed. The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.
This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations a professional within the Institution Facilities department, this position will play a key role in ensuring WVSOM’s facilities remain safe and accessible.
This position requires on‑call availability to respond to occasional emergency needs involving plumbing and other essential trades, including campus snow removal. West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine is an equal opportunity employer.

Skills Required- Education:
- Successful candidate shall have a high school diploma or GED plus 36 months of relevant education or training.
- Successful candidate must have or be able to obtain within 60 days of hire as well as maintain Journeyman or higher plumber certification in West Virginia.
- Plumbing experience, along with other trades skills;
Over 3 years - Position requires a valid WV Driver’s License to operate state vehicles
- Knowledge of building trades, methods and practices, specifically plumbing work.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools as well as to service and repair hand and power tools.
- Ability to read and understand blue prints and construction diagrams.
- Ability to correctly perform basic mathematical computations as required by the job.
- Knowledge of shop and warehousing functions.
- Knowledge of local, state, federal plumbing and building codes, and OSHA requirements.
- Ability to read, write and comprehend English.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions, to reason logically and strategically.
- Ability to work effectively with all constituent groups.
- Ability to adapt to a wide variety of work environments.
- Perform plumbing duties, including but not limited to: repair work (emergency and non-emergency), upgrades and new installations, and construction.
- Performs minor building maintenance and emergency repairs as required in basic construction projects, primarily with plumbing. Will also assist with other trades work areas.
- Soldering copper tubing, installation and cleaning of drain links, installation and repair of fixtures, repair steam radiation and thermostats, repair and maintenance of steam and water boilers, etc.
- Cut and thread black iron and galvanized pipe.
- Utilize Pro Press tools and use for plumbing installations and repairs.
- Repair and rebuild pumps and motors for boilers and hot water supply.
- Steam and water boiler maintenance cleaning, and repairs.
- Clean and maintain boiler rooms free from debris and material storage
- Repair steam traps.
- Check and repair gas leaks.
- Monitor operating conditions of equipment to maintain safe conditions at all times
- Conducts regular inspections/service on equipment requiring routine adjustments or maintenance; i.e., back flushing, cleaning, lubrication or recalibration.
