Special Education Bus Operator # TBD, 240 days – Aurora School, Leesburg, VA
Job Title: Bus Operator
Employment Term: 200 days, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8; may be extended by JCBOE.
Hours: 5:30 am‑9:00 am and 1:30 pm‑5:00 pm (split‑shift, break between runs). Hours may vary.
Immediate Supervisor: Director of Transportation / Transportation Supervisor
Job SummaryOperate a school bus or other transportation vehicle (15‑ to 92‑passenger capacity) to safely transport students to and from Aurora School. The operator must maintain a clean, mechanically sound vehicle, conduct pre‑trip inspections, and provide excellent customer service in a disciplined environment.
Duties and Responsibilities- Operate the bus safely and efficiently to transport passengers to designated destinations.
- Adhere to all traffic laws and regulations.
- Perform pre‑ and post‑trip inspections.
- Learn and follow the route, including pickup and drop‑off locations.
- Use fire extinguisher and other emergency equipment as needed.
- Assist and supervise students with disabilities.
- Assist passengers with boarding and exiting the bus.
- Walk from the driver’s seat to the rear of the bus to perform tasks such as checking the engine compartment, removing obstructions, and adjusting mirrors.
- Maintain a clean and orderly interior; mop and clean inside and outside the vehicle.
- Install snow chains, check oil and antifreeze levels, and perform other routine maintenance.
- Secure wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
- Communicate with students, parents, school officials, dispatcher, and other drivers to coordinate routes and schedules.
- Report accidents, incidents, or mechanical problems to appropriate authorities.
- Complete required paperwork accurately.
- Work overtime as needed and attend training sessions and meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with JCS policies.
- Perform all duties outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336.
- At least 21 years of age.
- At least 3 years of driving experience as a licensed operator of any vehicle.
- Clean driving record with no accidents or violations.
- Possess a WV CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements, maintained continuously.
- Successfully complete WV School Bus Safety Program and pass the necessary online and skills tests.
- Ability to climb in and out of the bus and inspect the engine compartment.
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification.
- Pass a physical examination by a medical examiner and a drug/alcohol screen.
- Ability to sit for long periods, tolerate ill children, and manage cleanup from student sickness.
- Excellent driving skills, knowledge of traffic laws, and strong communication/interpersonal skills.
- Physical fitness to lift and move at least 50 pounds (100 pounds on a special education bus).
- Remain calm and focused in stressful situations and solve problems effectively.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Meet all requirements outlined in WV State Board of Education Policy 4336.
Must pass training and WV state competency test for Bus Operators. Provide CDL documents and background‑check documentation as required by WV Code §18‑5‑15c. A minimum of three supervisory references is required.
Physical/Mental RequirementsFrequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, writing, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions are required. Must lift or move at least 50 pounds (100 pounds on a special education bus). Good vision for reading road signs, monitoring instruments, and monitoring students is essential.
Work EnvironmentExposure to temperatures ranging from below freezing to 80 °F+. Noise level is moderate to loud (60‑90 dB). The job may involve discipline, urgent situations, and communication with passengers and staff.
