Transportation Worker Equipment Operator - Hampshire

The Transportation Worker 1 performs apprentice level, unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridges, and related buildings and structures. Position will be assigned as an Equipment Operator. Uses light motorized highway maintenance equipment to repair and replace concrete and bituminous road surfaces, cleans culverts, and repairs shoulders. Performs rough carpentry and builds forms. Operates various maintenance equipment.

May also mow or clear bush from along roads or DOH facilities using a hand scythe or hand mower. May plow snow using a light truck. Performs related duties as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment to obtain commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

• In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator and Mechanic, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

• Operate a light truck or vehicle.
• Operate a fork truck to load and unload trucks.
• May operate End loader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Bruch Chipper.
• Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
• Plow snow using a light truck.
• Perform minor maintenance on fleet of equipment and vehicles.
• Transport fuel to equipment.
• Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
• Flags traffic at construction sites.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

• No formal education required.

• This is the entry level classification in this series. No prior experience is required.
