ESL Long-term Substitute Teacher

Westborough High School in Westborough, MA seeks a dynamic ESL (English as a Second Language) Long-term substitute Teacher from 8/31/26 - 10/14/26.

High School Long-term Substitute Teacher, ESL

Principal & Director of English Language Learning

FSLA Status: per diem

Compensation: $290 per diem, non-benefited

The ESL Teacher fosters a love of learning that encourages student curiosity, engagement, and growth in a welcoming community of learners. The teacher provides learning experiences that engage students in language arts, math, science/technology/engineering, social studies, and social-emotional learning guided by the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district standards and requirements. The ESL Teacher facilitates English language acquisition and the academic, social and behavioral supports for students who are English Language Learners through direct service, collaboration, consultation, and coaching.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's and/or Master's degree from an accredited college/university in a related field
  • Professional Certification:
    • MA DESE licensure in ESL
    • Additional certification in special education and/or Elementary Education highly desirable
  • CORI, SORI and Fingerprinting: All appointments are conditional based on a satisfactory CORI, SORI and SAFIS Background Check per 603 CMR 51.00.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience teaching English Language learners and in a diverse public school setting
  • Experience with students with special needs, including students with emotional, behavioral, and/or learning challenges
  • Knowledge of WIDA Standards and language objectives
  • Strong background in language acquisition instruction
  • Strong background in literacy and math instruction
  • Highly desirable to have experience with:
    • Balanced Literacy
    • Readers' and Writers' Workshop model
    • Explicit phonics instruction
    • Guided Math Workshop model
    • Inquiry-based instruction
    • Project-based learning

  • Scaffolds language for academic support, both in direct-service through various models, including co-teaching and inclusion, and through consultation with other educators
  • Teaches language beyond a task
  • Monitors students' understanding of the curriculum, provides specific feedback students, and adjusts instruction, materials or assessments when appropriate
  • Evaluates and refines instructional practice and assessment strategies to increase student learning, engagement, language acquisition, and confidence
