Systems Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Software Engineer, Hardware Engineer
The Principal Electrical and Embedded Systems Engineer is responsible for defining and owning the end-to-end electrical and embedded architecture for Kopin’s microdisplay-based products, including augmented and virtual reality, weapon sights, head-mounted displays (HMDs) for ground and aviation platforms, medical visualization systems, first person viewing goggles, and other near-eye display devices.
This role encompasses full-stack electrical and embedded system-level design across schematic capture, high-speed mixed signal and power electronics, FPGA and ASIC design, embedded processors, real time firmware, signal and image processing pipelines, sensors and displays, networking, and customer/platform interfaces. The Principal Electrical and Embedded Systems Engineer is responsible for tradeoffs and interface definitions across constraints including data flow, latency, microdisplay requirements, optical performance, system latency, power budgets, manufacturability, and customer integration.
The role serves as a technical authority and customer-facing architect and works closely with systems engineering, embedded software, optics, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and external partners to deliver cohesive, production-ready electrical and embedded solutions.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:- Define and own the electrical and embedded software implementation for microdisplay-based products, including internal and external hardware and software interfaces, power management, signal processing, data flow, display and sensor interfaces, and external I/O.
- Lead system trade studies balancing performance, latency, SWaP, thermal performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
- Define electrical and software interfaces and timing requirements for microdisplays (LCD, OLED, FLCoS, micro
LED) and display systems, including driver electronics, image pipelines, synchronization, and low-latency video transport. - Partition and define hardware/software boundaries, power management, control paths, and data flows.
- Provide technical leadership for schematic design, printed circuit layout, and manufacturing for flex and rigid circuit assemblies.
- Lead electrical system integration, debug, and validation, resolving complex cross-domain issues spanning hardware, firmware, and display subsystems.
- Define verification strategies for electrical and embedded subsystems, power integrity, timing, and environmental robustness.
- Support customer engagement by presenting electrical architecture, tradeoffs, and system integration strategies.
- Drive DFM/DFT considerations and lead transition from prototype to production.
- Mentor other engineers, establish best practices for electrical and embedded system design, and contribute to technology and platform roadmaps.
