KOPIN CORPORATION – INNOVATING MICRODISPLAY AND SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGIES
Kopin Corporation is a leading developer of advanced microdisplay systems and semiconductor solutions for defense, AR/VR, and cutting‑edge electronics. We are seeking a Wafer Mask Designer (Contract position) to support top‑level mask layout and tapeout activities for Backplane and LED wafer technologies. This role is critical to achieving precise wafer alignment and high‑performance device integration.
In this CONTRACT position, you will collaborate with external foundries, design essential wafer structures, and ensure compliance with stringent optical and electrical requirements. If you are detail‑oriented, experienced in semiconductor mask design, and passionate about enabling next‑generation display technologies, we want to hear from you!
POSITION OVERVIEWWe are seeking a highly skilled Wafer Mask Designer to support top‑level mask layout and tapeout activities for both Backplane and LED wafer technologies. This role is critical to ensuring precise alignment between wafer layers, enabling high‑performance device integration. The ideal candidate is detail‑oriented, experienced in semiconductor mask design, and comfortable collaborating directly with external foundries.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Lead and execute top‑level mask layout and tapeout activities for Backplane and LED wafers.
- Design and integrate essential wafer structures, including:
- Alignment marks
- I/O pads
- Active array regions
- Cathode rings
- Ensure precise alignment between Backplane and LED wafer features to meet stringent optical and electrical performance requirements.
- Coordinate closely with Backplane and LED foundries to gather design inputs, clarify requirements, and drive alignment on mask specifications.
- Serve as the primary technical interface with foundry partners during mask review, iteration, and approval cycles.
- Address and resolve technical questions related to mask design, layout rules, and integration constraints.
- Maintain accurate documentation of mask revisions, design decisions, and foundry communications.
Kopin is a defense contractor and is subject to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). You must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (green card holder) to be considered for this position.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in semiconductor mask layout, photolithography, or device integration.
- Proficiency with industry‑standard mask layout tools (e.g., Cadence, Tanner, KLayout, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of wafer‑level alignment, overlay requirements, and design‑for‑manufacturability principles.
- Experience collaborating with external foundries or manufacturing partners.
- Excellent communication and documentation skills.
- Experience with display backplanes, micro
LEDs, or advanced packaging. - Familiarity with design rule checking (DRC), LVS, and tapeout workflows.
- Knowledge of semiconductor process flows for both silicon and compound semiconductor wafers.
- Experience with microdisplay systems, near‑eye optics, AR/VR/HMD/HUD electronics, or imaging technologies.
- Familiarity with MIL‑STD environmental requirements, ruggedized system design, or aerospace/defense customer expectations.
- Experience with modeling, simulation, or system analysis tools (MATLAB, Python, SysML/UML).
- Experience supporting transition from prototype to low‑volume production.
