Elementary Principal (PreK-5)

Reports to: Superintendent of Schools

Supervises: Professional and non‑professional staff members in accordance with District policy.

Job Goal(s)

Provide organizational leadership to achieve successful school operations in support of building and district instructional, communication, and behavioral goals, thereby promoting the best possible educational opportunity for each student and staff member in RSU
9.

Performance Responsibilities Personnel
  • Supervise and assist staff in the performance of their responsibilities.
  • Report to the appropriate District administrators regarding the needs of the school.
  • Work with staff to develop a positive “can‑do” culture focused on student and staff success and teamwork.
  • Evaluate staff for the purpose of improvement of instruction and contract renewal.
  • Recommend assignment, promotion, retention, or dismissal of staff to the Superintendent.
  • Provide orientation and support to new and beginning staff at the school and district level.
  • Assist in the recruitment and retention of highly skilled and successful staff members.
Curriculum/Instruction
  • Assist in studying the instructional and curriculum needs of Mt. Blue RSD and develop plans and action steps for meeting and surpassing potential student progress.
  • Demonstrate leadership for the general school program to meet Mt. Blue RSD community needs.
  • Assist and supervise instructional staff in the development and implementation of curriculum and student activities.
  • Support educator creativity to differentiate individual student instructional needs.
  • Use resources of the school system and the community when focused on school and district goals in developing an effective educational program.
  • Coordinate programs between grades and with other schools in the district and during student transitions.
Site Based Management
  • Develop and maintain a climate where mutual respect and cooperation is demonstrated among students, staff, families, and administrators.
  • Provide a system of open communication among professional and non‑professional staff.
  • Plan and construct a schedule for the effective daily operation of the school by working with other administrators as necessary for shared staff.
  • Supervise daily activities and school‑sponsored functions.
  • Report to District administration regarding the needs of the school for equipment and supplies.
  • Develop and administer the school's budgeted allocations.
Students
  • Model the importance of and for student individuality in learning.
  • Assist staff in developing a safe and respectful school community.
  • Assist in the development of procedures ensuring the appropriate placement of students in the school district.
  • Develop a process for positively recognizing student progress and accomplishments.
Parent and Community Involvement
  • Keep the public informed to further the community's understanding and support of the educational program.
  • Support families in becoming important members of the school community.
  • Schedule conferences with teachers, parents, and students whenever necessary.
Other Administrative Responsibilities
  • Implement Board policies, administrative rules, and regulations relating to the school.
  • Prepare reports as may be required.
  • Act as an active member of the District Administrative Team.
  • Serve on, and provide leadership for, various committees that develop school and district programs.
  • Serve on local and state professional organizations, as appropriate.
  • Participate in and help run Individualized Education Program Meetings (IEPs).
  • Attend Mt. Blue RSD Board of Directors meetings as assigned.
  • Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
  • Assist in the implementation of RSU 9’s Strategic Plan.

As determined by the Board of Directors.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
