Position: Assistant Director of Special Services (1 year only)

The Westbrook School Department is seeking a dynamic Assistant Director of Special Services for the 2026-27 school year to support and enhance the district’s comprehensive special education programs. This one-year position will collaborate closely with special services administrators, providers, staff, and other district and building leaders to ensure that all students, particularly those from diverse and high-need backgrounds, receive equitable and adequate educational opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program development and evaluation
  • Personnel management, hiring, and supervision
  • Professional development of staff
  • Coordination with special education teachers, providers, support staff, contracted service providers, and building and district leaders to ensure the success of all students
  • Advocacy of students and prioritizing student needs
  • Overseeing specific programs and grade-spans (to be determined) which may include special purpose programs and out of district placements
  • Management of resources
  • Collaboration with families and community organizations
  • Accuracy and compliance of program functions, documents, and records
  • Fostering a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive work environment
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Valid Maine Assistant Administrator of Special Education certification (035) or the ability to obtain it.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in special education, including leadership roles, with strong knowledge of special education laws and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience working with high‑needs student populations, showing a strong commitment to equity.
