Job Description
New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is currently seeking a full‑time 32‑hour Oncology Nurse Navigator to work in our Westbrook office. The Nurse Navigator helps patients and families navigate the health‑care continuum, interacts with patients, offers advice and counsel, and advises physicians of patients’ needs and recommended interventions. Performs nursing assessments and triage of patient care needs over the phone and in the office;
works collaboratively with the Clinic Manager and infusion nurses in carrying out day‑to‑day clinical operations. Communicates issues to the appropriate Clinic Manager, Department Manager, or Director.
- Point of contact for referring physicians, patients, and caregivers to assist with patient scheduling and coordination of care.
- Coordinate appointments with providers to ensure timely delivery of diagnostic and treatment services and ensure that appropriate medical records are available for these appointments. Facilitate linkages to follow‑up services.
- Assist physicians and conduct patient assessments.
- Work closely with the Research Department to provide access to clinical trials.
- Maintain communication with patients, survivors, families, and health‑care providers to monitor patient satisfaction with the cancer/blood disorder experience.
- Receive patient telephone calls and intervene appropriately for that patient’s specific needs in a timely manner. Alert physician as needed to patient needs that require physician intervention.
- Follow up with patients by telephone, as needed, to ensure compliance with treatment guidelines and to evaluate changing or uncertain clinical situations. Arrange language translation and/or interpretation services as needed.
- Work closely with the Financial Advocates to facilitate financial support for all modalities of treatment.
- Maintain patient care standards and assure that patient care functions, such as assessment, treatment, and documentation are completed safely and effectively.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, in‑services, and continuing education programs, national and regional professional organizations, and community‑sponsored programs specific to oncology and hematology.
- Incorporate evidence‑based research into clinical practice and provide recommendations on practice clinical policies and processes to practice Directors.
- Coordinate patient care responsibilities within the scope of the practice for licensed and unlicensed health‑care providers.
- Assist with arrangement of transportation if needed.
- Community outreach: build partnerships with local agencies and groups, refer to other services and/or survivor support groups.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Licensed Nurse within the State of Maine required.
- Two years or more of nursing professional experience required.
- Hematology/Oncology experience preferred.
- OCN required within one (1) year of hire or when eligible based on ONCC criteria.
- ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Certification required within six (6) months of hire.
- AONN required within two (2) years of hire.
