The Community Pre-Vocational Instructor is responsible for facilitating classroom-based instruction and coordinating community-based activities that allow individuals to apply and reinforce learned skills in real-world settings. Using a person-centered approach, the instructor supports skill development that promotes independence, self-confidence, and meaningful participation in the community.

The Community Pre-Vocational Instructor will schedule and oversee individualized community-based volunteer and job skill experiences aligned with goals identified in each individual's person-centered plan, ensuring continuity between classroom learning and practical application.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
  • NYS valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage schedules, and adapt to different work environments.
  • Commitment to fostering inclusive, integrated employment opportunities.
  • Proficiency in using smartphones and workplace software (e.g., Microsoft Office)
  • Must possess and maintain a personal cell phone for work-related communication; this is a condition of employment.

What You Will Do:

  • Provide direct support and supervision to a group of up to eight Community-Based Pre-Vocational individuals participating in structured curriculum activities and community-based work experiences.
  • Ensure adherence to weekly schedules and planned activities while supporting participants in demonstrating appropriate social skills and workplace behaviors within community settings.
  • Integrate life skills, job readiness training, and travel training into daily group activities and volunteer experiences to promote independence and meaningful community integration.
  • Participate in person-centered planning by fostering an environment that promotes empowerment, skill development, and self-advocacy, while addressing personal care and support needs as they arise.
  • Facilitate classroom-based pre-vocational instruction focused on developing transferable, non–job-specific skills, including:
    • Time management
    • Following directions
    • Stress management
    • Effective communication
    • Task attention and completion
  • Coordinate and supervise individualized and group volunteer opportunities aligned with each participant's person-centered goals.
  • Serve as the designated driver for group outings using a personal vehicle in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain consistent communication and collaboration with families, supervisors, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure accurate updates regarding participant progress, service outcomes, and status changes.
  • Collaborate with internal programs and departments as assigned by the supervisor to enhance service delivery.
  • Model professionalism, appropriate workplace behavior, and positive community engagement at all times.
  • Complete objective and timely documentation, including:
    • Daily service notes reflecting participation, skill development, and progress toward goals
    • Progress notes related to collateral contacts and required notifications
    • Monthly status summaries outlining service outcomes, progress, and identified barriers in compliance with agency and OPWDD standards
    • Annual evaluations assessing employability and pre-vocational skill development

Westbury, NY (Nassau County)

Work Hours/

Schedule:

Full-time, 24 hours per week. Monday through Thursday 9:30-4:30 varies up to 24 Hrs.
