General Statement: Parents as Teachers (PAT) is a nationally recognized home-visiting program for families with children. Parent Educators provide families with materials, activities, screenings, and other supports to foster positive child development. Parent Educators also provide families case management services to offer general support, information and referral, and coordination of services to assist families in meeting personal and self-sufficiency goals.

Supervision Received: The Parent Educator is supervised by the Parents as Teachers Supervisor and Lead Parent Educator.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct personal visits (60-75 minutes) using the Parents as Teachers curriculum on the required visit schedule.
  • Plan and deliver parent group connections focusing on a minimum of one of the following areas of emphasis: parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, or family well-being.
  • Complete required child and family screenings.
  • Maintain and submit in a timely way all required family and program documentation in accordance with program standards as required by funding entities.
  • Develop and maintain a community resource network.
  • Work in collaboration with district schools and community organizations.
  • Provide translation services for meetings, conferences, phone calls, and written documentation.
  • Assist parents and children with transitions to other services as needed.
  • Meet weekly with Supervisor or Lead Parent Educator for reflective supervision sessions.
  • Actively recruit families to enroll in program through in-person and telephone contact with providers and organizations known to serve eligible families.
  • Complete annually required competency-based professional development hours in order to remain certified Parents as Teachers parent educator.
  • Organize and inventory supplies/materials, etc.
  • Required to travel within the district and in/out of state.
  • Option to provide virtual services through interactive video conferencing or telecommunication recommended by Department of Health and Parents as Teachers National Center.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Parents as Teachers national certification preferred.
  • Experience in working with families with multiple needs.
  • Strong verbal, written and digital skills required.
  • BCI and CANTS clearance required.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle.
  • Flexibility to conduct home visits when families are available.
  • Strong knowledge and commitment to serving families of diverse social and economic backgrounds.
  • Adhere to program and contract requirements.
  • Adhere to confidentiality of families.
  • Be highly organized and accountable. Be an independent, self-motivated worker.
  • Be able to learn and understand and incorporate the three roles of a parent educator: partnering, facilitating, and reflecting into daily practice with families.
  • Be able to establish rapport with families and empower them by building on their strengths.
  • Be competent with computer skills; including web browsing, e-mail, Internet, and word processing.
Knowledge, skills and capabilities
  • Become knowledgeable about the Parents as Teachers model including the Essential Requirements necessary for model fidelity.
  • Adhere to Westerly Public Schools ethics and code of conduct with families, co-workers and community.
  • Adhere to Westerly Public Schools policies and procedures.
Education and Experience
  • Must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Child Development, Education or a related field, with a minimum of three years of public health or community development experience working with young children and/ or parents and previous supervised work experience with young children and/or parents.

Position Type: Part-Time

Salary: $22 to $22 Per Hour
