Receive, accession, process, embed, cut, stain, mount and label surgical specimens for examination by the pathologist.

Responsibilities- Prepares gross surgical specimens for Pathology Assistant or Pathologist
- Maintains accurate records of incoming and outgoing specimens and slides.
- Investigates and documents problems with unacceptable specimens
- Follows established guidelines for troubleshooting instrument, reagent or specimen problems
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety
- Participates in staff meetings, helps promote effective working relationships
- Uses Patient/Family center values/Conducts all work activities with respect to the rights and wishes of patients, visitors and patients families
EDUCATION
Successfully completed a NAACLS accredited histotechnician program within the last 5 years. This requirement is waived for individuals who have a current HT(ASCP) certification OR at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of academic credit from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), or an associate degree from a regionally accredited college/university, with a combination of 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of biology and chemistry (must include credit hours in both), AND one year full time acceptable experience in a histopathology laboratory.
EXPERIENCE
Three years of Histology experience preferred.
LICENSURE
ASCP certification (HT-ASCP) preferred.
