Current openings with the Health and Human Service Agency, Hillman Health Center Laboratory in Tulare. This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and future vacancies.

Typical Duties

Perform varied and specialized serological and immunological examinations to assist in the detection, definition and control of disease; perform varied and specialized microbiological procedures; prepare special stains, culture media, and other reagents for diagnostic and biological examinations; prepare and standardize biologic kits and reagents; perform quality assurance procedures and monitor results; select and assist in the development and testing of new laboratory methods for assigned activities;

plan and organize workload for section; train laboratory personnel; consult with other departmental personnel and laboratory personnel in public and private laboratories on technical methods and laboratory results; consult with physicians and other laboratories regarding problems and test interpretations; assist in technical aspects of laboratory research; review current scientific literature as it relates to microbiology; attend technical meetings and training sessions;

analyze and interpret laboratory data, keep records and write reports; practice and monitor proper safety procedures; perform preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment; perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications TRAINEE LEVEL

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in medical or public health bacteriology, microbiology or closely related field.

License: Approval from the State Department of Public Health to perform as a Public Health Microbiologist Trainee in accordance with California Administrative Code Section 1080.

I LEVEL

Education/

Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in medical or public health bacteriology, microbiology or closely related field and six months of experience in an approved training Public Health Laboratory as a Public Health Microbiologist Trainee.

Knowledge of:

  • Microbiological laboratory procedures and safety precautions to isolate and identify bacteria, fungi, parasites, tuberculosis and other microorganisms.
  • Serological principles and practices.
  • Communicable disease causes and modes of transmission.
  • Food and water testing procedures.
  • Basic math.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Read and interpret reference materials; write neatly and concisely in recording test results; communicate sufficiently to obtain clarification of instructions; follow verbal and written instructions; maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; prepare and use reagents, stains and media; use laboratory instruments in performing tests; use aseptic techniques to isolate and identify microorganisms; use patience, tact and courtesy in dealing with physicians and other laboratories regarding problems and test results;

    perform calculations for test results and quality control records; organize workload and accomplish tasks within established time period.

License: Possession of a valid California State Public Health Microbiologist certificate.

II LEVEL

Experience: Two years of experience as a certified Public Health Microbiologist or three years of experience as a microbiologist in a medical microbiology laboratory.

Knowledge of:

  • Quality assurance and preventive practices in the microbiology laboratory;
  • Principles and practices in public health microbiology to train professional personnel in bacteriology, serology, mycology, parasitology and virology;
  • Equipment and terminology utilized in examining body fluids, tissues, foods and water;
  • Federal and State laws and regulations regarding disease reporting and testing procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Perform difficult or complex laboratory tests and examinations according to proper procedures and safety precautions; analyze test results accurately and take effective action; read, interpret and apply technical information related to public health microbiology; prepare test reports and procedures.
