Career Advisor

Otterbein University is seeking a student-focused and collaborative Career Advisor to support the career development needs of Otterbein students and alumni. This position serves as a key member of the Student Success & Career Development team, providing career coaching, programming, employer engagement, and career readiness support to help students achieve their academic and professional goals.

The Career Advisor works closely with students, alumni, employers, faculty, and campus partners to deliver career development services, support experiential learning opportunities, and contribute to Otterbein's comprehensive student success initiatives.

This is a part-time, non-exempt position funded through grant support. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of grant funding and operational needs, with the possibility of annual renewal.

Responsibilities

Career Advising:

  • Advise students and alumni on major and career exploration, resume and cover letter development, interviewing skills, networking strategies, internship and job searches, and graduate school applications.
  • Administer and interpret the FOCUS 2 self-assessment career inventory.
  • Present on career-related topics through classroom presentations, academic department events, student organizations, and other campus programs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of career-related events and programs, including career fairs, workshops, and panels.
  • Provide career readiness programming and support related to Otterbein's four-year comprehensive academic and career program, READY.
  • Develop and improve mechanisms for tracking and reporting career services data and statistics for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist with approving employment opportunities posted on Handshake.
  • Assist with compiling and distributing information regarding full-time, internship, and part-time employment opportunities to students and academic departments.
  • Advise the Associate Director regarding career-related software and technology decisions.
  • Assist with content development for departmental social media platforms and websites.
  • Support undeclared students through outreach and assistance related to major and career exploration.

Employer Relations:

  • Assist with outreach to employers regarding on-campus and virtual recruiting and networking events.
  • Support maintenance and organization of employer outreach databases.
  • Communicate with employers to learn about hiring needs and labor market trends.

General Office Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the Student Success & Career Development team.
  • Communicate and collaborate with team members on a daily basis.
  • Support office operations as needed, including event planning and execution, student staff support, and office coverage during staff absences.
Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required;
    Master's degree in higher education, student personnel, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in career development, job-related counseling, human resources, or a related field.
  • Experience with database management and career services-related software.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and related hardware and software.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, sit, reach, and use repetitive motions of the hands and wrists. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, or bend. The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds and occasionally push and/or pull up to 20 pounds. This position requires close vision.

Regular and predictable attendance is required.
