Overview
This seasonal position lasts approximately 12 weeks and involves intermediate semi‑skilled work assisting with public works installation, maintenance, and repair projects. Duties include operating equipment, performing manual labor tasks, and completing related assignments as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Street Superintendent and Foreman. Standard work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a one‑hour lunch break.
The position may require occasional overtime, weekends, and on‑call responsibilities for after‑hours emergencies.
- Operate trucks, backhoe, and related equipment when assigned.
- Operate hand tools and small equipment to perform assigned tasks.
- Mow grass; help pick up trash and debris; trim trees.
- Paint street lines and curbs.
- Set forms and pour concrete.
- Assist with traffic control at construction sites.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Assist with snow and ice control.
- Patch, seal cracks, and fill potholes as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Some knowledge of the safe use, operation, and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which one is assigned; skill in the use of hand tools and equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical RequirementsThis work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force. It requires standing, walking, using hands, lifting, and repetitive motions; frequent speaking or hearing; reaching with hands and arms; pushing or pulling; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
It requires normal distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision; vocal communication to express or exchange ideas; hearing to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; operating machines and motor vehicles; working near moving mechanical parts; exposure to vibration, fumes or airborne particles; and a moderately noisy location.
- Valid commercial driver’s license in the State of Indiana (ability to obtain).
