Job Description

Applications will be accepted for Summer Academy Literacy Intervention Teachers (4) in the Westfield Public Schools. One teacher per grade 1‑4.

Literacy Intervention Tutors (LITs) are elementary education students from colleges and universities in the Western Mass Literacy Collaborative:
American International College, Bay Path University, Elms College, Springfield College, or Westfield State University. Applicants must have received written approval from their institution to apply for this position in Westfield Public Schools. If hired, the LIT will report to the Summer Academy Coordinators and work closely with their assigned Literacy Coach to do the following:

  • Meet and instruct assigned reading intervention groups in specified locations and at designated times. The primary focus of the LITs is to provide students with targeted instruction and deliberate practice opportunities.
  • Create a classroom intervention environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Implement program materials and approaches for effective reading intervention instruction and assessment beginning on day one of summer school and throughout the 16 days.
  • Assess the accomplishments of summer school students on a regular basis; and with supervision, provide progress reports, as may be required, and communicate with parents, as deemed necessary.
  • Prepare for assigned groups and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the coaches, the district and building administration, and by college faculty from the Western Mass Literacy Collaborative.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations, including weekly student attendance and weekly progress in the intervention lessons.
  • Interact with and support other summer school classes led by Westfield Public School Summer School educators as deemed necessary. This is secondary to providing the interventions.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Follow the WPS code of conduct for the classroom, which is consistent with established administrative policies, and develop rules of classroom behavior that are enforced in a fair and just manner.
Qualifications
  • The candidate must be an elementary education student at American International College, Bay Path University, Elms College, Springfield College, or Westfield State University, and must have received approval to apply for this position in Westfield Public Schools from the institution they attend. Only students whose names were provided by the colleges and universities will be considered.
  • Must be available to work all days and hours of summer school without exception (Monday‑Thursday, July 6‑July 30, 8:45 AM‑1:15 PM).
  • In addition to the Summer Academy Program hours, there are 2 hours collaborative planning time each week to meet with the program staff, including the Literacy Coach. This time will be scheduled at the beginning of each week with the staff involved.
  • As part of coursework with the colleges and universities, LITs must attend the professional development days (June 26, June 29, June 30, July 1, and July 2 from 9:00 AM‑3:00 PM) and all sessions of the companion 3‑credit course throughout the summer without exception. These hours are not paid by Westfield Public Schools, as they are part of the 3‑credit course offered by the colleges/universities of the Western Mass Literacy Collaborative (Summer Learn and Earn).
  • Approved applicants must complete all onboarding tasks with the Westfield Public Schools Human Resources Department on time and as indicated to be hired.
