Job Description

Westfield Public Schools is seeking a qualified applicant for one (1) opening of a Grade 6 Leave Replacement (full year) Teacher position at Westfield Intermediate School.

Responsibilities
  • Teach courses in Math and Science using the course of study adopted by the Westfield School Department, and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Develop lesson plans and appropriate instructional aids.
  • Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
  • Evaluate each pupil's progress in English/Social Studies knowledge and skills.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members to assess and help pupils with attitude and learning problems.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Work cooperatively with all aspects of the school administrative team/faculty and citizens to ensure the highest quality of educational programs.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records; may request resource speakers and field trips.
  • Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of pupil activities.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors to discuss pupil progress.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of Schools.

Qualifications
  • Certified as Elementary Teacher (1-6) by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
Additional Requirements

Work is generally conducted within the school building. Ability to travel throughout the school building is necessary. Position involves sitting and the ability to travel from one place to another within the classroom. Work is light in nature with regular lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above, generally of desk and file drawers.

Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards and telephones and other office equipment.
