RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teach skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science, earth sciences, biology, chemistry, physics, physiology, or science problems to secondary pupils utilizing the course of study adopted by the Westfield Public Schools and the appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content.
- Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Plan a science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and student experiments; organize laboratory activities for optimal learning.
- Demonstrate scientific concepts by using scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher‑prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.
- Provide individual or small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects or experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
- Instruct pupils in the proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment, and plant and animal life.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Evaluate each pupil's progress in scientific knowledge and skills.
- Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by administrative regulations.
- Supervise pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned work day.
- Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Maintain professional competence through in‑service education.
- Select and requisition books and instructional aids, science equipment, chemicals, and supplies, and maintain inventory records as required.
- Work cooperatively with all aspects of the school administrative team, faculty, and community to ensure the highest quality of educational programs.
- Cooperate with school administration in providing science displays and programs for the school and community, and in sponsoring science activities.
- Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of Schools.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
Salary and terms of employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield Public Schools Unit A salary schedule. Salary placement will be based on information contained in the application as submitted.

- Current and valid MA DESE Certification in Chemistry or Biology (9‑12) required.
