Job Description

Westfield Public Schools is seeking additional qualified applicants for the following position:

RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of authorized administrators shall:

  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of the students.
  • Prepare individualized education plans.
  • Collaborate with school based related service providers.
  • Collaborate with team on curriculum and student needs.
  • Assess educational needs of students by use of standardized tools, running records and other informal assessments.
  • Maintain complete records of re-evaluation periods, required student documentation and parent communication.
  • Integrate technology into instruction.
  • Provide differentiated instruction to students as needed.
  • Implement school, district and department policies.
  • Create and manage effective communication with parents of special education students.
  • Create and follow goals and objectives for IEP’s, write quarterly progress reports and follow behavior plans with integrity.
  • Follow the Westfield Public Schools code of conduct for the classroom which is consistent with established administrative policies and develops rules of classroom behavior which are enforced in a fair and just manner.
  • Plans and supervises assignments for classroom paraprofessionals.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the Superintendent of schools and/or their designee.

Welcome to Westfield Intermediate School. Our goal is to provide the highest quality learning environment possible for our students. The middle school provides a balanced program to meet the physical, social, emotional, and academic needs of our students. As a student, you will be encouraged to be independent and self-directed. You can expect to be treated fairly, provided a safe environment in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

You will be challenged to reach your greatest potential so that you will be a productive, creative, and responsible member of society. To help you become familiar with your school, we have developed this student & parent handbook. It contains procedures, attendance, and discipline policies that are used. Read this handbook carefully so you will know what is expected of you.

It is one of your responsibilities. If you have any questions about the contents, please ask one of your teachers or guidance counselors. It is important for families to know what goes on at the middle school. We encourage a firm avenue of communication between school and home. We invite you to become involved in your child's education. You may want to join the Parent-Teacher Advisory Committee or run for a seat on our School Council.

You may wish to help out with a school activity or volunteer in the school library. Your involvement in any way is important to your child's education. Parents/guardians are always welcome at the intermediate school. We need your support. We wish both students and parents/guardians alike a very successful year.

Job Requirements
  • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Work is generally conducted within school building. Ability to travel throughout the school building is necessary. Position involves sitting and the ability to travel from one place to another within the classroom. Work is light in nature with regular lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above, generally of desk and file drawers.

    Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards and telephones and other office equipment and to finger and handle.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Certified or certifiable as a teacher of Moderate or Severe Disabilities at the appropriate level, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
    • Training and experience in Orton Gillingham.
    • Knowledge of multi-grade high school curriculum.
    • Strong classroom management skills and ability to lead staff.
    • Those requirements as set forth under Federal and State Special Education Regulations.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
