Job Description

Westfield Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for a half-time ESL teacher position. The building assignment for the 2026-27 school year is at Westfield Technical Academy, with primary duties serving grades 9–12. ESL teachers' building assignments are evaluated annually based on district EL enrollment needs.

JOB SUMMARY:

The teacher is responsible for providing targeted English language instruction to English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 9–12. This role requires bridging academic language acquisition with career and technical education (CTE), equipping students with the English proficiency needed for academic coursework, vocational shop integration, industry credentialing, and post‑secondary success.

  • Provide direct English language instruction tailored to high school students with varying levels of English proficiency.
  • Adapt academic and technical curricula using Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) strategies to ensure access to both core academic subjects and vocational trade programs.
  • Integrate workplace literacy, technical vocabulary, trade‑specific safety terms, and industry credential language into ESL instruction.
  • Develop structured lesson plans using HQIM for small group and individual learning environments.
  • Administer state‑mandated language assessments (WIDA ACCESS for ELLs) and district screening tools.
  • Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and language acquisition plans in accordance with state guidelines, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Utilize assessment data to monitor academic and language growth and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Partner with academic teachers, CTE shop instructors, and special education staff to scaffold content and implement accommodations across academic and shop settings.
  • Collaborate with support staff to address student academic, attitude, health, and social‑emotional needs.
  • Participate in department meetings.
  • Maintain a safe, functional, and culturally responsive learning environment conducive to secondary and vocational education.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student academic and language progress.
  • Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or the EL Supervisor.

    Job Requirements
    • QUALIFICATIONS:
      • Current and valid certification in English as Second Language PreK-6 issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
      • Prior experience in bilingual bi-cultural education ESL.
      • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

        Successful candidate is expected to teach in person. Work is generally conducted within school building. Ability to travel throughout the school building is necessary. Position involves sitting and the ability to travel from one place to another within the classroom. Work is light in nature with regular lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above, generally of desk and file drawers.

        Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards and telephones and other office equipment. Regular attendance, on site, is an essential function of this job.
