Overview
Western Massachusetts Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, provides inpatient care for patients requiring ventilator, respiratory, end‑of‑life, neuromuscular, Alzheimer’s, and chronic care services. The position of Registered Nurse IV – Supervisor (260004OD) is a 40‑hour, evening shift role (3:00 PM – 11:15 PM) with additional weekend, holiday, and irregular shift coverage as operationally needed.
Responsibilities- Supervise and coordinate nursing staff and patient‑care activities across assigned units for all adult and geriatric patients during each shift.
- Generate nursing assignments and time schedules to ensure adequate 24/7 nursing coverage.
- Assess patient care plans, review charts, observe care, and conduct patient/family visits to safeguard nursing care and treatment compliance with physicians’ instructions.
- Apply and maintain compliance with Joint Commission (JCAHO) standards, facility policies, and clinical protocols.
- Conduct staff evaluations, provide feedback, and administer performance appraisals and progressive discipline when necessary.
- Coordinate the transfer of patients to other health‑care facilities for emergency and routine services.
- Manage supplies and equipment, maintain inventory levels, and recommend new equipment purchases to improve care quality.
- Educate staff, patients, and families through instruction and educational case conferences.
- Investigate and resolve patient and staff complaints and other concerns.
- Perform clinical tasks in adherence to acceptable nursing standards and act as charge nurse when required.
- Knowledge of supervisory principles, planning, and patient assignment.
- Two (2) years’ experience as a Registered Nurse Supervisor with clinical, regulatory, and educational responsibilities.
- Illustrated ability to prepare statistical reports and maintain accurate records.
- Effective written and oral communication skills to provide clear, understandable instructions.
- Capacity to participate in interdisciplinary health‑care teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Current registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
- Recent graduates from an approved nursing program must have applied for the first available examination.
- COVID‑19 and influenza vaccination or mitigation measures as required by the Commonwealth’s regulations.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse Supervisor.
- Medical/Med‑Tech experience, CPR, and IV certification.
- Knowledge of public‑health nursing philosophy, principles, and theories.
- Demonstrated understanding of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, and safety practices.
- Ability to establish relationships with individuals, families, providers, physicians, and staff.
