Summary

Under the direction of the security supervisor, the officer protects the life and property of all persons on Baystate Health property. The officer ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center/hospital, patrolling hospital buildings and grounds, deterring loss of property, employees, patients, and visitors by preventing illegal entry by unauthorized individuals. Responsibilities include monitoring surveillance cameras, reporting suspicious activities, enforcing the access control program, examining doors and windows, checking and maintaining hospital vehicles' security, monitoring fire, security, and infant security protection systems (as applicable), responding to all calls for assistance and emergency codes, and providing escorts for patients, visitors, employees, and students.

Job Responsibilities

Patrol the facility and grounds or maintain fixed post coverage, inspecting for security, health, and safety hazards, unauthorized persons, unsecured doors and windows. Make notifications or take corrective actions as necessary. Respond to calls for service, alarms, and emergency code activation; render aid, traffic/pedestrian control, and clinician assistance, such as de‑escalating emotionally distressed persons who may pose a safety risk. Report any unusual occurrences, property damage, thefts, and all suspicious activities.

Prepare reports specific to the problem noted. Interact with staff by communicating crime prevention and security awareness information.

Enforce the access control program. Issue visitor badges by policy, explain access denials clearly following policy guidelines, identify persons without identification in all areas of Baystate Health facilities. Ensure doors within the patrol area are secured or opened at the correct times, complete unsecured door reports, document inspection of high‑risk areas, clear floors of visitors as requested by nursing staff, issue vendor and other specialty badges.

Take immediate action to correct security/safety problems and conduct building rounds to ensure doors/windows are securely locked. Respond to requests to lock, unlock, and secure doors according to specified schedules.

Focus on the protection, safeguarding, security, and customer service needs of patients, visitors, and employees, and their possessions and medical center property, maintaining the highest quality of safety and service to the BH Community.

Respond to codes and other emergencies immediately as directed. Operate fire equipment following department procedures. Have a working knowledge of emergency response plans and assist the supervisor and Emergency Management Director in setting up the emergency operations center (EOC). Notify the Police when appropriate.

Assist in traffic control: keep fire lanes clear of traffic, provide direction to visitors on parking and patient pick‑up areas, perform traffic control for helicopter landings, enforce parking rules, and complete reports. Control vehicle traffic in and around the institution to prevent congestion.

Handle disruptive situations: understand the policy on the use of force, manage complex, dynamic, emotionally charged situations to restore order, employ proven crisis intervention techniques, use effective and appropriate de‑escalation techniques, demonstrate understanding of restraint protocols, and work with other departments to provide a team approach to managing disruptive incidents.

Provide escorts as directed by the security supervisor, ensuring safe escort for employees and visitors within and when leaving the institution as requested.

Conduct preliminary investigations: collect all required preliminary information at the incident scene, including personal data, property data, relevant times, and circumstances. Render a report in a timely manner. Conduct
