The Westfield Gas and Electric is looking to hire a full time Telecommunications Installation Technician. ($31.72-$39.33).
The main role of a Telecommunications Installation Technician is to install, test, troubleshoot and maintain fiber optic and other communications systems in a FTTX network. Candidates for this position should have at least a high school diploma or GED and some sort of experience with CAT5 and CAT6 wires and or SM/SM Fiber Optic cables; they must also know the universal color codes of communication.
The Telecommunications Install Technician should be self‑motivated, hard‑working, and willing to adapt to changing technology, and must also have at least two years of relevant work experience in the field.
Responsibilities include:
- Travel to customers’ premises to install, maintain, or repair audio and visual electronic reception equipment or accessories.
- Explain service to subscribers after installation.
- Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results, to assess transmission characteristics and locate faults or malfunctions.
- Splice cables, using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment.
- Set up service for customers, installing, connecting, testing, or adjusting equipment.
- Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes, auxiliary equipment, or appliances, using bucket trucks, or by climbing ladders, or entering tunnels, trenches, or crawl spaces.
- Use a variety of construction equipment to complete installations, such as digger derricks, trenchers, or cable plows.
- Know and understand aspects of a fiber optic system installation and repair.
- Know and understand elements of a fiber optic system and associated equipment to operate and maintain a telecommunication system including an OTDR, fusion splicer, light source and meter.
- Performs skilled work in aerial, within a bucket truck to a height to not exceed 55’ for the purpose of installation, maintenance and repair of communications equipment.
- Mount racks or cabinets and oversee cable distribution.
- Note differences in wire and cable colors so that work can be performed correctly.
- Test circuits and components of malfunctioning telecommunications equipment to isolate sources of malfunctions, using test meters, circuit diagrams, and other hand tools.
- Test repaired, newly installed, or updated equipment to ensure that it functions properly and conforms to specifications, using test equipment and observation.
- Inspect equipment on a regular basis in order to ensure proper functioning.
- Remove and remake connections in order to change circuit layouts, following work orders or diagrams.
- Demonstrate equipment to customers and explain how it is to be used, and respond to any inquiries or complaints.
- Analyze test readings, computer printouts, and trouble reports to determine equipment repair needs and required repair methods.
- Adjust or modify equipment to enhance equipment performance or to respond to customer requests.
- Request support from technical service centers when on‑site procedures fail to solve installation or maintenance problems.
- Assemble and install communication equipment such as data communication lines, wiring, switching equipment, wiring frames, power apparatus, computer systems, and networks.
- Communicate with bases, using telephones or two‑way radios to receive instructions or technical advice, or to report equipment status.
- Program computerized switches and switchboards to provide requested features.
- Diagnose and correct problems from remote locations, using special switchboards to find the sources of problems.
- Maintain computer and manual records pertaining to facilities and equipment.
- Install updated software, and programs that maintain existing software and/or provide requested features such as time‑correlated call routing.
- Collaborate with other workers in order to locate and correct malfunctions.
- Review manufacturer’s instructions, manuals, technical specifications, building permits, and ordinances in order to determine communication equipment requirements and procedures.
