Supervision Received:
Incumbents receive direct supervision from higher‑grade employees, Institution Chief Power Plant Engineer, Directors of Facilities and Operations, and/or the Associate Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities. Instructions on work assignments are provided and performance is reviewed through inspection and verbal reports for effectiveness and compliance with agency procedures.
Supervision Exercised:
The position may exercise functional supervision over 1–5 laborers and/or tradespeople on a temporary or permanent basis.
Salary: $3,023.48 Bi‑Weekly (Grade 19, Step
6)

Working Conditions

Requires exposure to adverse weather conditions, noise, fumes, high voltage, high‑pressure boilers and furnaces. Work occurs in cramped, confined, and poorly lit spaces. Physical stamina, manual dexterity, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds for prolonged periods are necessary. Work from ladders and scaffolds over 15 feet in height. Shift work may include nights, weekends, or holidays, and a 24/7 standby (on‑call) status may be required.

General

Statement of Duties

The Utility Plant Supervisor oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of campus HVAC systems and other mechanical systems, including but not limited to the campus steam system, boilers, chillers, coolers, cooling towers, chilled water systems, hot water systems, air handlers, exhaust fans, laboratory Air and Vac, fume hood exhaust fans, pumps, electrical and plumbing systems related to domestic hot water, BMS controls, campus water main, pool systems, and acid neutralization systems.

and Responsibilities
  • Supervises the operation, maintenance, and repair of the institution steam power plant and all related HVAC, electrical, plumbing and pool systems.
  • Monitors operation, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of boilers, furnaces, and auxiliary equipment such as oil burners, blowers, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, and hot water heaters; makes repairs to power plant and campus mechanical/electrical equipment.
  • Reads meters and gauges at specified intervals to ensure proper temperature, pressure, fuel levels, and water levels.
  • Implements lubrication schedules for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment and auxiliary components.
  • Monitors operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration systems, chiller systems, institution heating system, and the entire water distribution system including hot water, pumping, geothermal wells, and storage.
  • Operates, maintains, and controls Building Management Systems for all campus buildings, including Honeywell EBI, Siemens Desiga, and pneumatic systems.
  • Performs pipe fitting repairs on steam, condensate, hot water, chilled water, and related systems.
  • Maintains and monitors campus pool equipment.
  • Works with campus plumbers to ensure proper maintenance of hot water heaters and associated systems.
  • Monitors maintenance of power house logs, recording gauge readings, fuel consumption, steam generation, and maintenance work; manages time, vacation, sick leave, and other attendance records.
  • Supervises and trains new hires in the HVAC, Power Plant, and Plumbing departments as needed.
  • Operates and maintains work order and preventable maintenance systems for all campus buildings; evaluates needs, completes work, and closes out work orders.
  • Provides project management support and reviews operational and capital projects.
  • Co‑ordinates with DCAMM, state inspectors, and local inspectors for all campus‑wide equipment inspections.
  • Operates an aerial boom lift for varied projects.
  • Provides shift coverage in the power plant as needed.
