General supervision from the assistant director of trades and grounds; functional supervision from higher‑grade HVAC mechanics who provide training, instruction, assign work and review performance. - Supervision Exercised:

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics are exposed to noxious fumes, chemicals, inadequate ventilation, excessive machine noises, and high‑voltage equipment. They work in confined or cramped spaces and must lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
General Statement of DutiesThe HVAC Refrig Mechanic I installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, including related fixtures, and performs related work as required. The basic purpose is to install, maintain and repair HVAC equipment.
Duties and Responsibilities- Installs HVAC equipment, including controls and related fixtures, using refrigeration, pipe fitting, and structural layout techniques, blueprints and appropriate machines, tools and work aids.
- Checks equipment for malfunctioning by observing pressure and vacuum gauges, adjusting controls, identifying gas leaks, injecting refrigerant, adjusting valves and pumps, and using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ohmmeters, amp probes.
- Maintains, rebuilds, and repairs by replacing worn or defective parts such as switches, fuses, thermostats, electrical wiring, pumping gas or fluids into systems, adding necessary liquids, lubricating motors and bearings, and changing filters.
- Calculates heat loads for new installations; analyzes and treats both open and closed water systems such as cooling towers by adding algaecides.
- Performs related work such as making and assembling metal ducts and chassis parts, drilling holes for mounting rackets, screwing, boring, riveting and welding parts to assemble structural and functional components such as motors, controls, switches and gauges, and installing shells and cabinets of systems.
- Maintains safety standards, quality, and energy conservation programs.
- Performs programming tasks, monitors energy systems and makes calibrations.
- Performs preventative maintenance, repairs, installs equipment, and makes annual adjustments to the systems.
- Uses computerized preventative maintenance programs and building management systems.
- Prepares orders/quotes for materials and equipment needed during the performance of HVAC duties.
- Knowledge of standard preventative maintenance procedures for HVAC and related electrical systems.
- Knowledge of lubrication methods for machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of care and maintenance of small hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of small hand tools such as hammers and screwdrivers.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in the installation, maintenance and repair of HVAC and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of terminology, coding, symbols, and standard abbreviations used in HVAC systems.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques for installing, maintaining and repairing HVAC and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of pipe threading techniques.
- Knowledge of types and uses of equipment and materials used in HVAC and electrical systems.
- Skill in using small hand tools such as hammers and screwdrivers.
- Skill in using small handheld power tools such as saws, drills and power hammers.
- Skill in using electrical testing equipment.
- Skill in operating HVAC machinery and related equipment.
- Knowledge of electrical, electronic and pneumatic HVAC control systems.
