Supervision Received: Incumbents of positions at this level receive direct supervision from employees of higher grade, Institution Chief Power Plant Engineer and Director(s) of Facilities and Operations and/or Associate Vice President of Capital Planning and Facilities, who provide instructions on work assignments and review performance through inspection and verbal reports for effectiveness and compliance with agency procedures.
Supervision Exercised: Incumbents of positions at this level may exercise functional supervision (i.e., over certain, but not all work activities, or over some or all work activities on a temporary basis) over 1‑5 laborers and/or tradespeople.

Utility Plant Supervisor works under exposure to adverse weather conditions and environmental hazards such as noise, fumes and gases; high voltage; high pressure boilers and furnaces; works in cramped, confined and poorly lit spaces in the performance of duties; may be required to endure physical stamina and endurance alongside manual dexterity and the ability to lift and/or move heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) for prolonged periods of time;
work from ladders and scaffolds over 15 feet in height; work varied shifts, nights, weekends, or holidays, and is subject to a 24/7 standby (on‑call) work status.
The Utility Plant Supervisor is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the campus heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and other mechanical systems including but not limited to campus steam system, boilers, chillers, coolers, cooling towers, chilled water systems, hot water systems, air handlers, exhaust fans, laboratory air and vac, fume hood exhaust fans, pumps, electrical equipment, plumbing systems as it relates to domestic hot water, BMS controls, campus water main, pool systems, acid neutralization systems, and all associated campus equipment;
performs related work as required.
Essential:
- Supervises the operation, maintenance and repair of the institution steam power plant including the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, mechanical, related electrical and plumbing equipment and systems, pool systems, acid neutralization systems, and performs related work as required.
- Monitors the operation, maintenance, repair and cleaning of boilers, furnaces and auxiliary boiler equipment such as oil burners, blowers, flow meters, pumps, compressors, generators, hot water heaters and other similar mechanical items; and make repairs to power plant equipment or other mechanical or electrical repairs throughout campus.
- Reads meters and gauges at specified intervals to ensure proper temperature, pressure, fuel levels, water levels, etc.
- Implements the lubrication schedule for heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment and auxiliary equipment.
- Monitors the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration system, chiller systems, and equipment; institution heating system; an institution water distribution system, including hot water, pumping, geothermal wells and storage.
- Operates, maintains, and controls Building Management Systems for all campus buildings;
Honeywell EBI, Siemens Desiga, and pneumatic systems. - Performs pipe fitting repairs on steam, condensate, hot water, chilled water and related systems.
- Maintains and monitors campus pool equipment.
- Works with the campus plumbers as needed to ensure campus hot water heaters and associated systems are maintained properly.
- Monitors the maintenance of power house logs, recording gauge readings, fuel consumption, steam generation and maintenance work; keeps time, vacation, sick leave and other work attendance records.
