A Quality Control Technician is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully below. A Quality Control Technician typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.
Key Duties- Control the quality of the production of hot mix asphalt through inspection of the plant, production materials, and jobsite review, and conducting routine and special laboratory testing.
- Sample and conduct visual inspection and laboratory testing of construction materials according to the appropriate standard test methods to ensure quality control at points of production, shipping, and arrival on the jobsite.
- Use test methods, including DOT regulations.
- Communicate and document test results to plant operator, supervisor, and operations.
- Review mix designs and product to job specifications of upcoming projects.
- Perform jobsite inspection, customer service, and troubleshooting as needed.
- Prepare various QC reports and formulate specific recommendations to resolve or correct quality issues.
- Visually inspect stockpiles, material sources, plant and truck loads at plant sites.
- Assist in plant inspection and calibration to ensure proper product quality.
- Verify outside construction materials laboratory results and maintain accurate, timely records of test data and defective materials.
- Prepare statistical summary quality reports on company product lines.
- Serve as a technical resource to operations, sales, and customers.
- Stay informed of professional and technical developments and attend relevant meetings to maintain and improve operational efficiencies.
- Possess and demonstrate a strong working knowledge of asphalt and plant operations.
- Perform tests efficiently and accurately.
- Understand mix design characteristics for asphalt products and specifications.
- Strong math and computer skills required.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to interact with personnel at all levels.
- Ability to problem-solve and work independently.
- Work with outside vendors, agencies, and customers on quality-related issues.
- Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.

Education and Experience- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- One to two years of college or equivalent (trade school, specialized training).
- 3-5 years of field and plant experience in testing and controlling quality of asphalt pavement materials and aggregates.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- Physical effort, including standing, for at least eight hours per day; ability to stand for extended periods and stoop, bend, and crouch as required.
- Work with hands extended overhead and hand power tools.
- Lift and carry 50-90 pounds frequently, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
- Maintain constant alertness to concurrent activities of the construction site.
- Walk on uneven surfaces in varying weather conditions.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust associated with construction.
- Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
- Potential exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and ready-mixed concrete.
- Assess work environment for possible hazards and ensure adequate training.
- Use proper personal protective equipment and tools appropriately.
- Speak up if witnessing an unsafe act.
- Identify and report near miss incidents.
- Ask for help when needed to perform tasks safely.
- Consider safer ways to perform work and communicate those.
