Director, Web Solutions

The Director, Web Solutions leads Carnegie’s cross‑functional web team, overseeing day‑to‑day delivery across front‑end development, back‑end development, user interface design, project management, and web strategy. This role serves as the operational bridge between senior creative leadership and the delivery team while actively advancing the team’s capabilities through AI‑enabled development practices, full‑stack evolution, and smart subcontractor management.

Duties and Responsibilities Team Leadership and Operations
  • Lead and manage a cross‑functional web team spanning user interface design, front‑end development, back‑end development, and project management to build beautiful and useful digital experiences.
  • Serve as the operational bridge between senior web/creative strategy leadership and the day‑to‑day delivery team.
  • Establish clear workflows, accountability structures, and delivery standards across concurrent client engagements.
  • Manage subcontractor and vendor relationships, ensuring quality, accountability, and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Manage financial performance and budget oversight in coordination with senior leadership.
Technical Leadership and AI Enablement
  • Apply hands‑on technical depth across the full web stack.
  • Partner with leadership, UX, and design teams to build the collective vision of web AI capabilities.
  • Champion AI‑enabled development practices across the team, including vibe coding methodologies, AI code agents, LLM‑integrated build workflows, and emerging developer tooling.
  • Drive the team’s evolution toward full‑stack developer capability, breaking down traditional front‑end/back‑end silos and building cross‑trained practitioners.
  • Support integration of AI productivity tools into web team workflows.
  • Ensure Carnegie’s development practices actively experiment with, pilot, and implement emerging AI advancements.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Creative, Brand, and Digital Media teams to ensure web delivery integrates seamlessly with broader brand, campaign, and marketing ecosystems.
  • Collaborate on enterprise system integrations, including CRMs, SISs, analytics platforms, and APIs, as part of holistic web delivery.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical oversight for front‑end and back‑end development.
  • Extensive experience managing the technical development for both open‑source and commercial content management system‑driven sites, preferably with Word Press, Drupal, Hannon Hill Cascade, Modern Campus, and Terminal Four.
  • Ongoing active exploration of AI‑assisted development tools such as Cursor or Git Hub Copilot, utilized to model and champion AI‑enabled workflows.
  • Strong operational management skills, utilized to build and maintain efficient delivery processes across multiple concurrent client projects.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical stakeholders at all levels, utilized to align delivery decisions with strategic and client goals.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, vendor relationships, and external budgets, utilized to control costs and ensure delivery quality across a significant portfolio of external spend.
  • Effective communication and time‑management skills required in the remote environment, as well as the ability to use/learn multiple technology platforms and switch between them on a regular basis.
  • Physical requirement:
    Must be able to work at a computer for prolonged periods.
Credentials and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life/work experience.
  • 8 or more years of web development, digital delivery, or agency experience.
  • 3 or more years of team leadership or operational management experience overseeing both front‑end and back‑end development practitioners.
  • Demonstrated day‑to‑day experience with AI‑enabled development workflows in a professional setting.
