Welder (1st Shift) Job Description

This 1st shift Welder role requires a versatile welding professional who can perform a wide range of welding and fabrication tasks in a clean, organized, and safety-focused industrial environment. You will use various welding processes and equipment to fabricate, repair, and maintain industrial components, while accurately interpreting blueprints and weld symbols and supporting preventive maintenance activities as needed.

• Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, general arrangement drawings, and sub-component detail drawings to complete welding and fabrication tasks accurately.

• Perform MIG, flux core, arc, and TIG welding on a variety of materials, including structural components and pipe, in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions.

• Layout and fit components for welding, including basic pipe fitting functions, to ensure proper alignment and fit-up.

• Maintain, repair, rebuild, and fabricate parts for all types of industrial equipment as required.

• Perform preventive maintenance inspections on equipment, diagnose mechanical and structural issues, and complete necessary repairs while reporting findings to supervision.

• Examine welds for bead size, quality, and compliance with specifications and standards, making adjustments as needed to maintain quality.

• Repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes by applying appropriate welding techniques and filler materials.

• Position, align, and clamp work pieces together or assemble them in jigs or fixtures to prepare for welding.

• Select appropriate torch, torch tip, filler rod, and flux based on welding charts and material type and thickness.

• Tack assemblies together to hold components in place prior to final welding.

• Chip or grind excess weld, slag, and spatter to achieve required finish and prepare parts for further processing or assembly.

• Follow all plant, state, and federal safety regulations and general work rules, including proper lock-out/tag-out procedures and consistent use of personal protective equipment.

• Perform miscellaneous tasks and support additional projects as assigned by supervision to meet production and maintenance needs.

• Certified Welder with the ability to perform MIG, flux core (FCAW), arc, and TIG welding.

• Ability to obtain a D14.1 certification at a G1–G4 position within 30 days of hire.

• Minimum 2 years of experience in a metal fabrication environment or equivalent experience.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, weld symbols, and structural drawings.

• Hands-on experience with flux core welding, structural welding, and fabrication processes.

• Ability to use measuring tools such as tape measures and apply shop math to layout and fabrication tasks.

• Working knowledge of applicable manufacturers and industry standards, including CMAA, HMI, ANSI, and OSHA.

• Ability to lift or pull a minimum of 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks safely.

• Solid written and verbal communication skills for documenting work and collaborating with team members.

• Strong analytical, conceptual, and planning skills to troubleshoot issues and plan work sequences.

• Excellent math skills and overall PC literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office.

• Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and disciplined approach with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for working with industrial equipment and components.

• High school diploma or GED required.

• Military experience, trade school, or technical school training in welding or a related field preferred.

• Experience reading complex structural and fabrication blueprints and weld symbols.
