Work Study, Academic Support, Technology or Laboratory (Biology)

Learning Objectives:
Science Laboratory Support

1. Laboratory Preparation and Technical Skills

The student will develop the ability to accurately prepare laboratory materials, equipment and supplies for instructional labs in Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Physics and Microbiology. Outcomes:
Prepare lab materials according to instructor protocols and preparation sheets. Demonstrate proper handling of scientific equipment, specimens and chemicals. Maintain organization and readiness of teaching laboratories. Follow setup and breakdown procedures efficiently and accurately. Wash glassware. Support timely preparation for multiple lab sections and disciplines.

2. Laboratory Safety and Compliance

The student will demonstrate understanding and application of laboratory safety standards and institutional safety procedures. Outcomes:
Identify and follow chemical, biological and physical safety protocols. Properly use personal protective equipment such as gloves and goggles. Demonstrate safe handling and disposal of chemicals, biological materials, sharps and glassware. Understand emergency procedures, spill response and incident reporting. Maintain compliance with laboratory safety requirements.

3. Inventory Management and Organization

The student will develop organizational and inventory management skills necessary for laboratory operations. Outcomes:
Organize laboratory storage areas and stockrooms efficiently. Monitor inventory levels and identify low stock items. Assist with labeling, stocking and rotating supplies. Maintain accurate inventory records. Demonstrate proper storage procedures for chemicals, biological materials and equipment. Support end of semester and fiscal year processes.

4. Professionalism and Workplace Readiness

The student will develop transferable professional skills applicable to scientific and technical work environments. Outcomes:
Demonstrate reliability, punctuality and accountability. Communicate effectively with faculty, staff and peers. Follow verbal and written instructions accurately. Manage time effectively while balancing multiple assignments. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in an academic setting. Work independently while also functioning as part of a laboratory support team.

Other Requirements:

• Consistently maintain 6 credit hours each semester;
• maintain satisfactory academic progress;
• adhere to College's confidentiality policy;
• successfully pass background/drug screening;
• maintain open lab time as scheduled;
• help maintain the facilities;
• other general maintenance requirements;
• work with specialized equipment including chemicals;
• preference given to currently enrolled students in major;
• familiarity with Microsoft Office;
• ability to work with minimal instruction;
• other duties as assigned.
