Overview
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and connecting readers with the right titles and products. You help maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure efficient operation, including unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and handling transactions at the register to provide a high level of professional service.

Responsibilities- Maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts.
- Fill scheduling gaps when possible, demonstrating flexibility to meet store needs (open from early mornings to late evenings, including weekends and most holidays).
- Perform tasks with purpose and energy, working hard and reliably; be positive and supportive of colleagues.
- Assist customers with a cheerful, helpful attitude and consistently strive to connect readers with the right products.
- Unpack deliveries, stock and tidy displays, and ensure the store presents well.
- Operate the register efficiently to serve customers quickly and professionally.
- Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries and the shelving that follows.
- Find books and other products using knowledge, colleagues, and available information tools.
- Support the café team when needed and contribute to loss prevention and de-escalation efforts, identifying issues and seeking appropriate support.
- Using varied technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs) comfortably and efficiently.
- Developing merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
- Developing visual merchandising skills across categories (gifting, toys, and other products) to maintain presentation.
- Running a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Supporting the receiving and unpacking of deliveries and efficient shelving.
- Finding books and products accurately with personal knowledge and available tools (Book Master and information resources).
- Understanding loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques; identifying theft and seeking appropriate support for issues in the store.
All work involves physical activity, including prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and walking. You may work in other stores if needed to support the wider cluster.
Career DevelopmentAs you gain experience, you should expect your bookselling knowledge and skills to develop. You will increasingly contribute as you develop expertise and may advance to Senior Bookseller with new challenges and growth opportunities.
Responsibilities and Knowledge Growth- Build knowledge of fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books across subjects and categories.
- Use knowledge to maintain sections and present books attractively; make effective recommendations to customers.
- Learn to sell books positively, supporting key sales objectives (e.g., Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, preorders) and share knowledge with customers and colleagues.
- Develop knowledge in Educational Toys and Games, Specialty Games, Hobby and Collectibles, music and movies, and Newsstand; apply to store operations.
- Maintain sections and backstock and assist customers in their shopping; support key sales objectives and new releases.
