Controls Design Engineer
- 1-5 years working in a role involving industrial control systems
- Experience working with PLCs and HMIs from either Rockwell Automation or Siemens. Other brands will be considered.
- Understanding of standard industrial electrical drawings. Preferable if the candidate can develop drawings. CAD experience not necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology preferable but not a strict requirement.
- Open-minded, flexible, tends to default to “yes” rather than “no”. Positivity.
- Ability to learn and use the resources at your disposal to solve problems, sometimes in challenging environment (i.e., a start up on a tight schedule).
- Personable and attentive to customer satisfaction. Customer service is a core value of the team here.

- Read project proposals, specifications, and scopes of work to understand our scope of work.
- Develop electrical drawings:
- Work with Senior Project Engineers and Engineering Managers to develop drawings for controls projects.

- Engineers are expected to mark-up drawings and work with a detailer to get drawings where they need to be. You will not be doing your own CAD.
- Develop PLC, HMI, or SCADA software:
- Efficiently develop software that meets customer, project, or other kinds of requirements.
- Develop project documentation:
- Develop operational description documentation
- Develop commissioning and validation documentation
- Develop lockout placards
- Develop spare parts list
- Develop subcontractor scope of work
- Capital Equipment Acquisition:
- Get quotes for material and place orders
- Travel to panel shops and conduct equipment checkout
- Travel to job sites: (typically 30-40%)
o Travel is unpredictable ally, when you start the design of a project, you will see it through in the field. Because controls are the last team to touch a system, our schedule is usually ruthlessly shifted, bearing the delays of all of those who came before us. Project travel varies heavily with the project. Small pumping skid? Maybe a weekend.
Complete paint shop? Several months, maybe over a year. We know our engineers are human and most can’t travel in perpetuity. However, we cannot read your mind. It’s incumbent upon an engineer to communicate their needs to project management and the business, if necessary. We are a team.
- Ideally, you will see a project through to fruition, especially if you were involved in developing the electrical drawings, the system software, and ensuring delivery of capital equipment.
- Sometimes a project may consist of strictly site work.
- We supervise electrical contractors, providing a trusted resource to help them get to our desired outcome.
- We start-up and commission the systems we design, ensuring that our designs work as intended.
- As part of start-up and commissioning, you’re expected to thoroughly complete commissioning documentation, documenting that things were checked out and what the setpoints should be. You are also expected to keep detailed mark ups of any electrical drawing changes. Your software probably isn’t 100% perfect either. You will more than likely end up changing things with the PLC or HMI software.
- After start-up and commissioning is completed, we sometimes are required for stand‑by support in case something goes wrong during a critical time.
- When traveling to a job site, you might interface with basically everyone: trades, project managers, operators, plant management. You are expected to always conduct yourself as a professional and represent the business well.
- As-Bult Documentation:
o Finish the job. Compile all documentation as required for the final as-built transmittal.
Compensation / Benefits:- $40 - $50/hour (depending on experience) - Salaried position paid hourly.
