Become a Metering Systems Engineer 2 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you'll directly contribute to the successful modernization of the SCE's metering infrastructure by ensuring that AMI 2.0 technologies are thoroughly tested, validated, and deployed with high reliability. This position requires close collaboration with internal teams including engineering, IT, grid operations, and field operations as well as external metering and AMI solution vendors.

The Engineer ensures that metering systems, communication components, and grid applications are technically feasible, interoperable, secure, and aligned with the utility's quality, performance, and reliability standards. This role is instrumental in ensuring field readiness and the successful deployment of next-generation AMI technologies that advance SCE's long-term vision for grid modernization, operational excellence, and a more intelligent, connected energy ecosystem.

Day-to-Day

Activities:

  • Conduct detailed functional and communication performance testing for qualified AMI 2.0 metering solutions.
  • Support end-to-end system integration testing, including interoperability between meters, head-end systems, networks, and grid management applications.
  • Validate meter firmware, configuration files, communication modules (WI-SUN, LTE, Wi-Fi), and AMI platform performance against defined requirements.
  • Troubleshoot customer-facing applications, test tools, and field diagnostic tools, escalating issues as needed and documenting resolutions.
  • Analyze test results, track defects, and contribute to corrective action plans to ensure successful solution certification.
  • Develop technical procedures, job aids, process documentation, and field test protocols for Field Technicians and Meter Operations teams.
  • Assist with readiness assessments, training activities, and operational coordination to ensure field teams are equipped for deployment.
  • Participate in pre-deployment change management activities by reviewing system changes, assessing operational impacts, and communicating updates to stakeholders.
  • Review and validate vendor-supplied hardware specifications, test reports, engineering documentation, and performance claims.
  • Support vendor and internal integration efforts to ensure firmware, communication modules, and device behaviors align with AMI 2.0 architectural requirements.
  • Assist in troubleshooting multi-vendor interoperability issues involving meters, communication networks, and head-end systems.

Responsibilities
  • Performs inspections and evaluations of existing conditions for various electrical equipment and systems for proper installation, problem identification/trouble shooting, and overall improvements.
  • Ensures system event assessments and RCA are performed for equipment failures and implements corrective actions, confirming proper mitigation plans are in place.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and design plans related to projects and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts independent engineering work, receiving guidance on the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Performs power system modeling and analyses utilizing software tools and applications; stays informed of technology advancements, market trends, and relevant guidelines and standards related to energy technology.
  • Ensures the performance of day-to-day preventive maintenance activities to maintain equipment and ensure continued operation according to required standards including Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) quality and environmental and reliability standards.
  • Helps ensure infrastructure's supporting processes are validated/qualified throughout their life cycle.
  • Develops the engineering facility design, including but not limited to electrical system design, such as sizing, creating one-line diagrams, and selecting equipment.
  • Assists in the development of new technology and standards strategy and the implementation of strategies into business operations to improve power system functionality and quality of service to customers.
  • Acts as project sponsors with some technical assistance when responding to technical questions requiring project modification to move projects through their lifecycle.
